Just watched the “Finding Jack Charlton” documentary. It’s quiet beautifully made, some incredible nostalgia and the sheer joy and happiness of 88, 90 and 94, mixed with a really sensitive portrayal of a man and his family dealing with the fairly advanced stages of dementia.
There’s a heartbreaking moment where they’re showing Jack old videos on a laptop and he doesn’t really remember or recognise much but Paul McGrath appears and Jack turns to the camera and says “Paul McGrath” with a cheeky smile.
It’s the type of documentary that if you don’t shed a tear of either sentimental happiness or sadness at some point then you might want to check if your heart is still there.
It’s available to rent on Sky and Apple TV. I’d highly recommend it.
I had read a review in the Guardian about it. Will be getting a watch over Christmas.
DID YOU NOTICE A SIGN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE...?
I watched the 'Finding Jack Charlton' doc last night. It's a lovely piece of film, capturing the real euphoria and joy of the 80s/90s and the awful, awful effects that dementia had on Jack himself and those who loved him most. He was absolutely my hero as a kid, such a titanic figure and it was tough to see how his huge personality was eroded by that terrible, terrible disease.
The ball is round and has many surprises.
It's on BBC2 tonight.
😥
It was on VM1 last night as part of a week devoted to dementia. I had planned to watch it last night but it's one of those that I need to watch ensconced on my own with herself gone out as I don't doubt I'd be balling and she'll ask a stupid question about 1990 and I'll get annoyed.
DID YOU NOTICE A SIGN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE...?
It actually needs more than 1 watch there is so much going on. An incredible piece of filmmaking.
Ended up watching BBC2 for hours last night, there was a second documentary about Jack followed by The Damned United
When Jack Charlton died, in July 2020, the FAI - if I recall correctly - said that they would remember him appropriately when the pandemic restrictions had ended. Since then of course there was a wonderful TV film documentary about Jack, but I was wondering if anyone in the Foot.ie community knows of any plans to remember him formally at an Ireland game, or through a memorial game -- or did I miss something?
