Ball or LED? If it's ball, try taking the ball out and cleaning both it and the rollers it runs on.

Lads,
Funny mouse issue here, moves up and down but not left and right, at least that is when the bus/hard drive/memory isn't busy (if the system is doing something, it will move but sluggish) .... The mouse works on other systems. Haven't tried other mouse on his, but doubt it. The mouse keys work (number pad i.e. 4=left, 6=right, etc) ..... updated drivers, used other drivers in the list. Scanned with AVG and removed anything to vault (normally gets everything) ... still no joy. Seems like a virus problem but cant find it.
Any ideas ??

If the mouse is working fine on other machines, are they using the same mouse mats? This might seem daft but cheap mice and nasty soft mouse mats sometimes make the problems of a dirty mouse much more apparent. If its an optical mouse then this is obviously not the problem. If its not an optical mouse go out and buy one.....

You need to determine if it's a hardware or software problem.
If it's PS2, get your hands on a USB mouse (providing you have a USB port) and try that. If the same problem occurs, then you know it's probably software related.
Someone who works in Tech Support would probably be able to give you more advice.
Have Boot Disk, will travel
If its a optical they can be messed up quite easily.
For a while Dell we giving shinny mouse mats with their optical mice, the reflection from the shinny surface used drive the mouse crazy
Oh no not them again

Lads, its not a hardware issue ... in all fairness, course i cleaned it and used with/without a mat !! ..... It is a software issue.

check if you have the system idle virus?Originally Posted by A face

Seriously, if you can't find any trace of a virus, you have uninstalled the old drivers and installed the new drivers and the mouse is being properly recognised in device manager you need to follow Peadar's advice and try a different mouse, preferably using a different port.
Just a thought, is this a laptop or desktop that you are having the problem with? If its a laptop you need to make sure that the mouse and the touch pad aren't conflicting.
