Decent effort from the Youths today in Ferrycarrig as they held the opposition who had to play for about 50 minutes with ten men in what was a well-contested friendly.Youths started with Graham, Clarkey, Jamie, CJ, Jimmy, Joey, Glenn, Brian, Crokey and with Graham and Deano up front. Youths started well and after five, joey got a shot away which went wide. About twelve gone, Graham got a near-post touch to a low cross from the left in front of the Shels keeper but couldn't keep it on target. First Shels chance came after 15 when a good cross from the right found a Shels attacker free beyond the far post wide but it was headed wide.
With 30 gone, Deano again got a good cross in but Graham couldn't keep his effort on target. With ten to go, Joey got a yellow for dissent after Shels were awarded a free. With five to go, Shels had another good move down the right and the header out by the Youths was volleyed just over by Shels. Shels then picked up a yellow and this was followed by a straight red for another Shels defender who showed his studs going in for a tackle. 0-0 at half-time and probably a fair reflection of the game.
Second half was probably the less impressive of the two and was highlighted by only three gilt-edged chances, two of which fell to the home side. With five gone, Glenn had a good volley which the Shels keeper did well to push away. With eight gone, first good chance fell to Deano when he had a clear run in on the Shels keeper who managed to clear it away with his legs. Next good chance fell to Joey with ten to go when Deano set him up with a tap-in but he couldn't make a connection. Joey had earlier nearly got round the Shels keeper but the ball just trickled wide as he tried to steer it into the goal. Then with five to go, a Shels forward got a touch to the ball before Graham but Gary Delaney, covering back, just managed to clear it off the line before the ball crossed. So 0-0 at full-time.
Subs for Wexford in the second-half included Corkey, Caolan, Gary Delaney, Iain Goulding, the latter a trialist, I think. Best for Shels was Philly Hughes whose touch was a class apart. Thought Shels midfield didn't have players who wanted to put their foot on the ball as in previous years. Wexford seem well set up for the campaign and the only worry is where the goals are going to come from with either Deano, Graham or Rocks going to have to front up up front as they say in rugby. Finally, word around the ground is that Mick has wielded an iron fist in a pink glove with major upheavals on the non-football side of the club. 0-0 at full-time.

Apparently, some/most (?) of the existing committee were told they were gone by Mick and simply replaced. Haven't full details but someone else might know more. Good to see democratic principles in action in any event!
