Weeeew!!!
And McGee is through to QR3. 5-7, 6-2, 7-5!
Was 3-5 down in the 3rd.
Weeeew!!!
Yes was looking at it - 3-5 down but turn it around - playing Ze Zhang in 3rd round .....
6.00pm for a place in main draw - Court 8. Good luck to him.
Lost First set 6-0
But wins 2nd set 6-4.
2-0 up in the 3rd, just held from 40-15 down.
Served for the match at 5-2, was broken , just about to try again ; 5-4.....,,,
Ah this is tense, was 40-0 up serving for the match, hasn't finished the job, yet..
wooo!
5 match points later! He's through! God was only following that on slamtracker! Nerves!
Great news - is this is first time to make a grand slam first round?
Yep. This is massive for him, just pocketed himself about 30-35 grand, which is massive prize money. Will make a very big difference to his prep for future comps, and he's going to be floating near the top 150.
I had a look at the main draw, and some of the qualifiers have to play one another or wild cards in round 1, it'd be brilliant if he got to face someone he could beat, and then maybe play a big gun in round two in front of a crowd.
He playing a Kaz ranked 108 in the world so he has a chance in this one - when is this match on?
It's great news and i hope it gets him into the top 150 in the world - should set him up to go at these tournaments in a bigger way now hopefully
Provisionally playing on the 25th but no times/courts decided yet AFAIK. That lad is very big and strong, but James will have already played 3 games on these courts while he won't have played any, so there's every chance of an upset.
In other news, his win inspired me to give drawing him a lash.
McGee USOpen colour.jpg
McGee up 3rd on Court 13 on Monday. Play starts at 4.00pm Irish time so probably between 7.00 and 8.00ish Monday evening, maybe earlier. Sky may cover it. All good betting sites will
James was on newstalk this morning. No real talk of just being happy to be in the main draw, seems very focused on winning.
For some perspective on today's match:
From what I can gather - today will be just the 9th time a player repesenting Ireland will play a men's singles match in the open era. Matt Doyle - despite representing Ireland in the Davis cup from 1981 onwards, only started to represent Ireland on tour from 1985 onwards. Louk Sorensen's win in the 2010 Australian Open is Irelands only win in a grand slam mens singles game in the open era.
1977 Sean Sorensen L R1 Wimbledon to Rod Laver (AUS)
1980 Sean Sorenson L R1 Wimbledon to Patrice Dominguez (FRA)
1985 Matt Doyle L R1 Australian Open to Jay Lapidus (USA)
2010 Louk Sorensen W R1 Australian Open against Lu Yen-hsun (CTP) , L R2 to John Isner (USA)
2011 Conor Niland L R1 Wimbledon to Adrain Mannarino (SWI)
Conor Niland L R1 US Open to Novak Djokovic (SRB)
Louk Sorensen L R1 US Open to Rogerio Dutra Da Silva (BRA)
2014 James McGee R1 US Open v Aleksandr Nedovyesov (KAZ)
Anyone know of any others ?
