I was talking to 2 different group of lads in London on Wednesday, 1 a group of lads from Drogheda (one of the boys I was with knew one of them, dont usually talk to Meath men ) I asked them did they follow Drogheda Utd and there answer from every single one of them was I wouldnt watch that ****e. Out of the 4, 3 had said they have never been to a game so I asked How did you know it was ****, there response sure everyone says it

The next group, 2 lads from Dublin and 2 lads from Belfast (who met each other in poland) The Dublin fellas were from Drumcondra and both said they have never been to a LOI game ever, the 2 lads from Belfast in fairness were big Cliftonville fans and proved it with many pictures and stories from when we played them a few seasons back in the Setanta Cup.

Sick to death of seeing flags at Ireland games with Chelsea FC etc.... on them and been looked down by some (not all) for wearing LOI colours out and about when on Ireland away trips

Excellent point. Also worth pointing out that in England 4th in the league is a better European spot that winning the Cup whereas in Ireland winning the Cup is the second best european spot after winning the league. The scheduling of the Cup with and the fact that the non-league teams aren't as competitive as they used to be is a factor too IMO

Daft last two columns. Dalymount capacity has been about 4,000 for about 5 years now. Hunky Dory is 3,500 max, I would say. Are there even 2.000 seats in Belfield?

You'd easily fit 2000 into the Belfield bowl. In fact the capacity is larger - there were 2552 people at UCD v Shamrock in 2011.

Now whether there are 2000 seats is another matter...

    Shocking.

Champions come to town and less than 600 bother to go?

I thought Waterford was a football town.

    Hasn't really been for years.

When you're third from bottom in the whole league of ireland, interest quickly evaporates.
I’m not pedantic...I’m merely overly concerned with minute details.

As I said on our own forum, I was appalled at the Waterford attendance. I hadn't given it any thought on the way to the game, and assumed there'd be at least 1,000 there.

Killing thing was it was a very decent game of ball, and whilst Sligeach were much teh better side, Blues put it up to them and were competitive.

Phuqing guarantee you there'll be 3000+ at the ManYoo youths friendly. Grrrr...........

A real worry that the league champions, who are respected for playing decent football, could only draw 500 Waterford people (Sligo had the 76). If this is the future, then, frankly, there is no future for pro football in Ireland.

A lot of the locals probably looked at it and thought Sligo would walk it, so didn't want to come out to see that.

I wonder where they've got their figures from, because some of them are very different to mine.

    Maybe so.

Waterford gave Sligo a good game by all accounts.

It sounds like they need a manager who can restore belief in their club and it's future.

Well at least you don't have an unrealistic opinion on the drawing power of Sligo

It's a real pity I think. When I started following Harps the cup was a big deal and you'd see a bigger crowd for a cup game against a team in your division than for a league game. Now it's always smaller unless very late in a cup competition. Boo-urns.
I think 'country' teams have always had the Cup in higher regard than Dublin teams. Not really sure why.

The thing about the early rounds of the cup now is that they come on the back of dozens of league games in the space of 6/7 weeks (for premier teams anyway). When I first had a season ticket, Cup games were included too. That doesn't help. Add in that this year there wasn't a single stand out game, it's not a surprise to see small crowds.

Surely Waterford people come out to see their own team, not the opposition.

I think its tough on a club to expect fans to all of a sudden come out in force for a cup match, during a very disappointing season.

Last year for example, we somehow managed to get to the FAI cup semi final, everyone knew it was just a case of turning up to see Pats steam roll over us. (3-0)

I think just over 2,000 attended the match, and I`d say half were away fans, not one bit surprising as we were 7 months or so into possibly our worst ever PD season.
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), only Irish club to win a game / points in Europa League Group Stage (2016).
