    Johnny Ramone R.I.P.

Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the punk band The Ramones, has died. He was 55.

According to his publicist, Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by family and friends. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and had been hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Along with his wife, Linda Cummings, Johnny Ramone was surrounded at his death by friends Eddie and Jill Vedder, and Rob and Sherrie Zombie. Other friends who had gathered at his Los Angeles home included Lisa Marie Presley, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo and Talia Shire.

Ramone, whose real name was John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs "I Wanna be sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The band's singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.

Johnny Ramone founded "The Ramones" in 1974 with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band.

A tribute concert and cancer research fund-raiser was held Sunday in Los Angeles to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. It featured performances by Los Angeles punk band X, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Henry Rollins and others.

This is very sad. The Ramones saved rock n roll.

I know they weren't exactly spring chickens, but 55 is no age to go. That's Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee gone now. Only Tommy left from the original hoodlums. end of an era, man. Rest in peace. GABBA GABBA HEY!

prostate cancer can be detected now in most cases by a simple blood test.
a mate of mine developed prostate cancer and had his prostate removed and is fine.when visiting the specialist at the blackrock clinic he was told that 1 in every 6 guys develop it and dont know.
    Get the test folks.

    Relax there a moment.
They've concluded now that the test is not reliable since it detects levels of a protein which can be high simply be due to an enlarged prostate rather than accurately identifying cancer. Most patients have had their prostate removed based solely on the results of this test. Many of whom did not have cancer.
Many doctors will not test men under 40.

    Very true!!!
I'm also informed that it's one of the most treatable or manageable cancers ....and no -you don't neccessarily end up ****ing in a bag for the duration
Like the man said -get the damn test! Lot's of ye will have health checks at work -Blood pressure/cholesterol etc... for an extra €15 they can do the prostate test as well. Once every five years is all y'need.

...And many men do not want to be tested, which is where a lot of the trouble comes from.

If you think they could be whipping out an important bit based on the results of an inconclusive test then I can understand some men may have reservations. The figures quoted for the rate of prostate cancer in men are based on the results of the protein test. It's wise to be objective about this.

Article about the protein test here.

    Interesting article Peadar, cheers.
There's so much fear and worry over this kind of thing, the more you know about it the better equipped you if you ever have to (God forbid) deal with it.

Totally agree. The Internet is great for getting a few different sides to most things and making up your own mind then. Men have traditionally neglected their health but at least with the right information we can be a bit more proactive about taking care of ourselves.

A bit late on this but I'm sorry to hear of his death. I'm a huge Ramones fan.

They got their name from Paul Ramone, an alias of Paul McCartney and the Undertones were nicknamed the Paddy Ramones. The Beatles, the Ramones and the Undertones are my three favourite bands which is why I chose Paddy Ramone.

It's amazing to think all the original members are dead except for the drummer Tommy. With all these Ramones dying maybe I should change my name. By the way Johnny had Irish roots and his real surname was Cummings. May he rest in peace.
