why build a wall ? (every time)
time and time again i've seen free kicks scored from outside the box that are a direct result of the defending goalkeeper being unsighted.
take the goal scored in the ill fated roma match last night.
the ball comes over the wall and the goalie sees it as it flies over his head and is rooted to the spot because the wall blocked his view of the balls flight.
i say, in a lot of the situations (free kicks from a distance),let the player have his shot and the goalkeeper has a very good chance of saving it no matter how well its struck as he would have a good view of where the ball is heading and would have that split second to move to change his position that he does'nt have now.
maybe people think a wall is the solution any time its a free against them but i think there are times when they are making it more difficult for themselves by doing so.
Been thinking that meself. For long range free kicks, a wall often does no good. Maybe one player standing in front of the ball, but that's it.
For closer free kicks however, ye need a wall. It does block off the view of the keeper a bit, but otherwise it leaves a big target for the free taker. Blocking the keeper's vision is just a chance ye take. If the free taker can get the ball up over the wall and back down again, he'll score. That's just how it is, no use in complaining.

some freekicks are just to good to stop.
the thing i hate about a wall is when it disintergrates, take juninho's free kick last night against man u, giggs just turns his back & thats how it got round that side of the wall (saying that Tim Howler still should have saved it).
