Spelling and grammar

Sorry for this, but I'm about to reveal my inner pedant:

Does anyone else notice the appallingly bad spelling and use of words of some people who post here?

And I'm not talking about txt msg language (like "Derry 2 go pro"), or even typos (like my own "Crow singing" instead of "Crowd singing" after the Greece-Ireland game), I mean people intentionally (but unknowingly) using the wrong word or spelling.

This is even more than knowing the difference between "there", "their" and "they're", which is so common perhaps the English language should abolish the distinction. The latest effort is by A face (not a direct attck on A face, but simply the straw that broke the camel's back) with "ridicules rule" where obviously he meant "ridiculous rule".

I couldn't be bothered trawling through past posts to find more examples, but perhaps others can find them...

Definitions: pedant.noun

Someone who is over-concerned with correctness of detail, especially in academic matters.
Thesaurus: dogmatist, literalist, pedagogue, formalist, doctrinaire, methodologist, quibbler, hair-splitter, nit-picker.
Etymology: 16c, originally meaning �teacher' without derogatory connotation: from Italian pedante teacher.

You need to get out more.Correctness of grammar is not a pre-requisite to post on this forum. If it was, it would be trite, tedious, and if I may be quite candid, full of stuffed shirt imbeciles like your good self who are out to pick holes and prattle on about immaterial subjects such as this one.

Let your hair down, make a few typos, misspell a few words.....it'll feel so, so good....Go on, be mad!!

I've noticed it but don't lose (not loose

) any sleep over it.
People seem to mix up its with it's quite (not quiet) often. My mate always uses been instead of being.
While I think that grammar and spelling are important, I would hate to think that someone would be reluctant to contribute their valid opinion because they feared being ridiculed over poor grammar. Poor conveyance of an opinion certainly doesn't make it any less important.

Some people are just plain lazy though.

joeSoap - Hey I wasn't saying people should get out a dictionary before they post anything, I agree that a forum should be a place to share opinions freely and frankly (it's not an academic journal, after all), I was simply remarking (in a roundabout way) that the education system doesn't seem to have done its job!

While we're at it, some notes on pronunciation for Irish people:

The patron saint of Ireland is not Saint PARtrick

The capital of France is not PAH-ris

There is no such thing as a SARcrifice.

And it's pronounced WESSMERland Street, not WestMOREland Street.

But it is annoying though - there are some posts you have to read three or four times to work out what the person's trying to say, which I think is the main point. Unfortunately, it's far easier to tell the person to go away than to bother learning basic literacy... Just like JoeSoap's post in fact!

Most people just fly through their posts and hit Submit. I do the same, but I tend to read over them to check before and after I post, and obviously correct the errors. Which is worse, bad spelling and grammer or pedantry? I say bad spelling and grammer.

If you know what the person meant (even if they were in full rant) then just get over it. You all know the one about arguments, the special olympics and winners ..... Give it a f�ckin rest like !!

Take a chill pill and a vanity check face, I wasn't talking about you in particular. And for the record, it doesn't, like, ruin my day or anything. If it's really bad I'll skip over it, if it's not so bad I just think to myself how incredibly lazy the people are.

You should have a semi-colon between the words face and I, Adam. The reason being that they are two complete but related sentences.

Also when signing off with your name use a capital letter as its a new sentence.
