Call him up Trap!
McLaughlin can set Forest alight, insists boss O'Driscoll

And call Barry McNamee up while you're at it!
Have only seen bits and pieces of McLaughlin from watching the LOI on RTE, but how does 'Stephen McLaughlin/Derry/2012' compare to 'James McClean/Derry/2011'?
McLaughlin is a more cultured player than McClean and always has been, but probably lacks the physicality and explosiveness that made McClean such a splash in England.
Obviously. There's something in the water over there.
DID YOU NOTICE A SIGN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE...?
McNamee's deal should go through soon too. Apparently, the fee for both players has been arranged, but "agency 'mishaps'" are to blame for any delay now: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20760667
Forest manager Sean O'Driscoll told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I think the fee has been arranged with Derry.
"There are just one or two agency 'mishaps' that we need to clear up, but there's nobody trying to stop the deal going through."
McLaughlin is a better player now than McClean was when he left Derry IMO.

End Apartheid Now! One Team in Ireland!
I just hope Derry and Finn Harps are getting their just rewards for producing these players for the clubs a
cross the water.
Always look on the bright side of life
Not looking great for McLaughlin with McLeish having now left Forest, although a club in turmoil might be precisely the kind of place where a bolter can emerge from the reserves. A bit of a funny aside that the Kuwaiti owners were trying to convince McLeish to bring in a number of Kuwaiti internationals, the best part being that he actually signed one.

McLeish had nothing to do with the McLaughlin transfer as far as I'm aware.

No, he came in under O'Driscoll but the turbulence can't be good for the fringe players at the club. In fact, I just read that Keith Burt - the scout who headhunted McLaughlin - was sacked last month so it's hard to know what's going on. Hopefully the club's reluctance to sign players during the transfer window means there'll be opportunities for the likes of McLaughlin now.
I just hope a new manager comes in who likes to give some everyone a chance and doesn't just stick with the same team that's been playing all along.
Macca certainly has the ability to make it at very minimum at Championship level, I believe he's better than James McClean and most definitely has his head screwed on right, and could make it all the way provided he gets a bit of first team action before the end of the season. I'd fear for his future otherwise if he's lurking in the reserves for the next year or two.

I think he's better than McClean talent-wise but that will all be nothing if he can't make the grade in terms of strength and fitness and that's where I'd be worried. It will take him a few months to get acclimated to the pace of English football, so I hope he can make it.
He's certainly one of the strongest/fittest players I've seen come out of the League here in a long time. I get your point though about getting up to speed with the English game, but he's most certainly strong enough to make the step up.

He is a big unit alright, but McClean is a bit of a wrecking ball and I don't think he'd have made the breakthrough if not for his size. McLaughlin is big for the LOI but players brought through the English system have years of physical training he doesn't. That said, if a manager gave him a chance I think he would be able to make it, but I just hope he doesn't have to sacrifice technicality for good old-fashioned English bulk.
And now he will have another new manager to contend with - the Forest owners have a lot to answer for, particularly getting rid of O'Driscoll who seemed to bring a degree of consistency to the club in his short time there.
Saw it reported on Facebook that McLaughlin made Forest's first-team bench yesterday although didn't see any action. Was that his first time on the first-team bench?
