    Switzerland and Austria

Travelling to Munich later in the year to take part in my second marathon. As a very regular runner I'm more inclined to combine a run with a trip and so I've run in Budapest, Amsterdam and Paris as my half and full marathon runs. I'm looking to go on to a part of the world I cant wait to visit. The North facing side of the Alps. I've travelled to the Italian Alps so it would be nice to see it from Austria and Switzerland. Flying to Berlin and travelling to Munich I'm looking to fly back to England via Vienna which is a city I'd like to see. I'd like to see Salzburg too. I just don't know where in Switzerland I should stop off and book a night in. Zurich doesn't seem to appeal much. Maybe I'm wrong.Any thoughts on where of these two countries I should definetely see.

I did a bit of travelling in that part of the world a few years ago. Didn't actually do too much due to financial constraints, mainly just wandering in cities, because I'm a big fan of walking anyway. The highlights were Lindau on Lake Constance, a short impromptu trip to Liechtenstein (where we had to sleep rough because the one hostel in the country was closed!), Innsbruck, and the ice caves at Werfen. We didn't see much of Switzerland unfortunately, but Austria is fantastic, definitely worth a visit. And I reckon it will be improved by being in decent shape, the best way to see most of the mountains and valleys is to walk them.

    Cheers Peadar,

Looking forward to Switzerland and Austria. Starting off with a couple of rest days in Berlin and then travelling to Lucerne. Salzburg comes highly recommended so looking forward to that. Thanks for the tips.
