Puerto Rico to become 51st US state

Looks today will be historic for more reasons than one, as Puerto Rico votes to join the Union:

    Commonwealth status: 404,945 (33.1%)
    Independence: 66,761 (5.5%)
    Statehood: 751,264 (61.4%)

It's not so straightforward. It was a non-binding referendum which gave 2 questions so there was not a very clear-cut answer.

Seemingly, a big issue is how a potential new bloc of voters (apparently primarily Democrat-leaning, at least initially) will be viewed by Republican congressional lawmakers.

I doubt it. The US still wants to expand its influence, power and control. It just doesn't want more full citizens with rights, demands and votes.
