    Not so fast!

Still remains to be seen what way the ball bounces here. Griffs agent is pushing hard for a move, Griff himself not so sure

I thought Griffin was out of contract, if he is then Derry shouldnt have to pay anything. Heard griffin wants to go but dundalk are demanding £20k compensation. Compensation is only paid if they are still under contract.

    Wrong.

Wrong. As he's under the age of 23, Dundalk would be due compensation. Griffin's youth club, Muirhevnamor, would also be due a "development" fee.

The case would be similar to the Alan Murphy transfer a few years ago, where Derry City had to pay Galway United €22k in compensation, the fee was determined by a tribunal and Murphy's last club (Ballinrobe Town I believe) were awarded around €2k.

The legal issue of it is, is that if his contract runs out, dundalk need to have offered him a similar contract within 6 mths of his contract running out. With dundalk not paying his wages on time last year 1) dundalk have breached the terms of his contract & 2) with 6 mths to go were not in a position to offer any players out of contract new terms. So from a legal position my view is derry are holding the cards here.

Dundalk will be due some compensation alright, If Derry and Dundalk cant agree the fee, I think it goes to Arbitration and they set the fee which both clubs must agree on.

Nope, once a player is under 23 and offered the same or higher terms than his last contract then the club are entitled to compensation. The fact that we were behind on wages once in the season has sfa to do with anything, all wages were paid in full. If that was an issue then he and all the other players would have automatically been handed their registration and been on free transfers in the summer. As Olander stated above is the case and another example is we got compo for Tom Miller when he went to Newport County even though he was only at the club a season as we offered him a new contract on the same terms after the season ended.

I dont think so, even though wages were missed, once they were paid up to date he remained a DLK player, contract would have been broken only if 2 months were unpaid. Plus the unpaid month was also paid in full.

The proposed move will depend on the player, and he strikes me off a homebird, so I would be surprised if he did leave, and besides, I dont even think Kenny has spoken to the players yet, his first few days was primarily all about PR and meetings.

One thing is for sure, there is no way Kenny will go with Rafter/Griffin as his strikeforce for 2013, so regardless of what happens here, expect to see a quality PD striker to be added to the squad, possibly even two.

Did Dundalk offer him a contract before his current deal ran out though?

All this talk of contracts and €20k is premature.

The player has to decide whether his career will develop better under a new Dundalk under Stephen Kenny or at Derry. Not an easy decision.

Thanks guys for feedback on this, but a contract must be offered 6months before the current deal expires for the compensation rule to take effect for any player u23. I think he will stay at dundalk due to the kenny factor. But wouldnt pay £20k for him

The requirement is 60 days before contract expiry, and you can take it as read that he got a valid written offer from Dundalk

Griff has ambitions on a move to the UK, and as White Horse has pointed out, his focus for next season is on where he can develop and catch the eye best to faciliate this possible move.

Stephen Kenny has already spoken to him to outline why he thinks staying at Oriel Pk is in his best interests.

"Of course Mark, Oriel Park would be the place to be if you're looking for a cross-channel move. Trust me - apart from Paddy McCourt, Niall McGinn, David Forde, James McClean, Danny Lafferty, Mark McChrystal and Conor Sammon, Derry City has zero track record with getting players a successful move across the water."

Stephen Kenny would probably be very familiar with the development of these players. Is there any of them that he did not manage at Derry City?

I imagine that Stephen Kenny is well able to point out his very impressive record of developing and improving players

Or maybe Kenny could say 'Stick with me Mark, as I got almost all of these players mentioned above their moves across the water'

Just Sammon. Tongue-in-cheek comment though Kenny didn't have so much success at developing talent at Dunfermline or Rovers. His talent lies more in spotting them rather than bringing them on - maybe Griffin will be flattered into staying.

Indeed. That's why all those cross channel scouts come to the Brandywell as opposed to whatever club Kenny's managing at the time.

Very interesting talk floating around at the LTFC end of year awards dinner. Things are very much looking up if what was being strongly hinted at pans out. New directors (it seems), lack of squad depth being addressed, best players from last season being kept on it seems.
Upwards to the vanguard where the pressure is too high.
