That game was played at the beginning of May.
Yeah, McGrath was in midfield that night I'm sure and set up Quinn's equaliser. I always remember one of tabloid headlines the next day - 'QUINN PEAKS'. The American television programme 'Twin Peaks' was pretty big around the time!
Was Kevin Moran wearing a headband in that game? I think he had a shot that hit the outside of the near post before we scored. From Dixon's deflected goal until half-time we simply battered them. It was relentless stuff and the goal from Quinn was inevitable when it came. What a shame about Houghton's miss - about ten mins from time?
Yeah I'm sure that was the game where he had a white bandage around his head alright after a clash. I remember O'Leary smacking one into the side netting as well from a tight angle. That was during the insane period in the first half where England could barley get the ball as far as halfway.
Amazing really looking back at it that we had the luxury of playing Paul McGrath in midfield because we had defenders as good as Moran and O'Leary to play centre back, even without Mick McCarthy. Irwin and Staunton as well being full backs who could attack and defend in equal measure, a rare commodity these days.
It's also often forgotten that the only reason England got a win away to Turkey against a team we comfortably dismantled twice was through a blatant punch of the ball into the net by that cheating little scrote Dennis Wise, the extra point they got that day was the difference, had we been level on points we'd have topped it on a far better goal difference.
Same old failings at our end tho, too many draws in games we should have won.
Is this another (veiled)attempt to show how good your memory is?! :P
I would have been around 8 or 9 for this. Its strange I remember the Holland game and the Italy game of Italia 90 and so many games where we got half days at school or brought to the assembly hall to watch(around the same time or earlier), a Christian brothers school too I might add, but I can't remember this gameAnd it was England. Was it on terrestrial tv?
I'm a bloke,I'm an ocker

Yeah, every game was live on RTÉ in those days including friendlies.
I remember the first fixture between the two as well. I was at school so my father 'taped' the game for me. I was home before it ended but I wanted to watch it in full without knowing the score. I had heard him clapping loudly when Cascarino equalised from another room in the house alright, but I didn't really know what was after happening for sure. When he was getting the recorded game ready for me he flicked over to RTÉ 1 to avoid the analysis on Network 2. That damn programme Live At 3 were after getting a report of the match from Lansdowne Road and the had they 1-1 scoreline on the bottom of the screen, very annoying!

I was two weeks out from my 7th birthday.
I have zero recollection of the Euro 92 qualification campaign. I remember Euro 88 (ish) from my dad going on about it around that time and Italia90 but no idea why Euro92 didn't happen in my mind!
I remember the WC94 campaign vividly.
I also haven't forgiven my mother for not allowing me get a half day for the game v the IFA team in Lansdowne where Staunton scored from the corner. Never forgive her!
DID YOU NOTICE A SIGN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE...?
It's never too late. I'd forgotten about Wise's handball goal. That's another one for my bitter memory bank.

In the Poland v England clip...
"England's strength and spirit envied by every other footballing nation"
The pretentiousness knows no bounds. Not one mention of Ireland in it either, he makes it sound like we weren't even in the equation. Even if Poland had won we would have still gone through ahead of them. What a sickening campaign.
It came absolutely apropos of nothing as well: "Poland were 1-0 up. Everyone loves England. Hurrah!"
I don't know if it's from an official commentary, but if it is, it's very poor form that the commentator has clearly made no effort at all to pronounce the Polish names properly
I'm actually getting annoyed even thinking about it.
I remember she said I could have the the half day but she didn't show up to collect me. I embarrassed myself by heading down to the yard to look for her. Gah.
We were 3-0 up in 28min.
Townsend 20, Quinn 22, Staunton 28

DID YOU NOTICE A SIGN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE...?
Reminds me of when I lived down in Ealing in the late 90's and I was in an Irish boozer when this little fella walks in and I knew I recognised him but I just couldnt place him. A lightbulb lit and I had it, it was little Bill Ray from Londons Burning. The mrs turned to me with a look of bewilderment and put me right, it was indeed little Dennis. I've never taken her to the pub since.
Hows about that for pulling a thread off track then!
I thought you were off the drink Ronnie?
"No, I drink to help me mind my own business....can I get you one? (c) Ronnie Drew
