The reception area gleamed at Everton’s training ground in south Liverpool on Thursday afternoon with history in the making and nobody at home. Sky Sports screams out the headline Moyes Resigns on the television screen in the lobby but the receptionist stoically has her back to the television and otherwise the place is deserted. Then Kevin Sheedy comes down the stairs and he doesn’t seem to notice. “It’s just one of those things,” Sheedy said, reluctant to be drawn on a matter, but when it comes to talking about his distinguished Ireland career he comes out of his shell.

An interesting article on his battle with cancer, it must have been even more of a shock to him when you read that it affected both his parents, ultimately leading to the death of his mother. Good to read he is in remission.

Despite being born in Builth Wells in Wales and being raised in Hereford, Sheedy has always been an Irish citizen and he says that the country of his father’s birth was the only team he was going to represent on the international stage.

“When I was 16 at Hereford United, I got a letter from the FAI saying I had been selected in their youth team.

“I knew Wales had a game at the same time, so I rang the Welsh FA just to see if I was in their squad and then I would make a decision.

“They said they were not in the business of announcing the squad before it was done officially, so I said ‘okay, thanks very much’, I then called the FAI to say I would be delighted to play for Ireland.

“I was always opting for Ireland and it turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made.”

46 caps and nine goals later, Sheedy’s name is etched into Irish sporting history after he struck one of the most iconic Ireland goals ever scored in Italia ’90, as the side reached the quarter-finals in their maiden World Cup campaign.

“They were just great memories. Personally, scoring against England in the 1990 World Cup is one of the best things I’ve done and nobody can take that away from me.

“We were direct, but I think people overlook the fact that it was a direct game but we had quality players playing it.

“The hairs on the back of my neck still stand up when I think about the 250,000 people on O’Connell Street as we went down on the open-top bus. It was just a great moment.”

Was a bit worried when I saw this thread reopened. Thought he might have been ill again. I see he got 9 goals for us. Does the one in the penalty shot out in Italia 90 count? Obviously he scored against England but I can't remember any of the others although this one has been drawn to my attention in 1985:

Good question that, Frank Stapleton scored in his last two games (at least I think they're his last two) - a 3-0 win against Malta and a 1-1 draw with Germany before Italia '90
Also, Matty Geoghegan was capped twice by Ireland in the 30's and scored in both, - a 5-2 win against Germany (coincidentally) and a 3-2 win loss to Norway

I just googled Kevin Sheedy and I see that he lost his wedding ring (Twitter).

9 in 46 Intl caps.

That's better than McClean's record and roughly on a par with Brady.

He was interviewed on 2FM's Off The Ball wannabe Game On earlier and the host mentioned that. Sheedy said he knows where he lost it, a restaurant where he was washing his hands, and is hoping someone comes forward with it

Former Derry City and Finn Harps player Kevin McHugh lost his finger last October due to having got his wedding ring caught on a fence during a training session and retired from football as a result (although he was nearing retirement anyhow): http://www.irishnews.com/news/2016/1...finger-731753/

Seems slightly farcical - in his sixties and AFAIK has never held a full-time senior manager's position.

Presumably something he applied for. There were other candidates out there too, Warren Feeney being one of them reportedly.

Mike Newell alongside him brings plenty of managerial experience, and in fairness to Sheedy, has plenty of coaching experience at youth level, spending ten years with Evertons academy.
