The Sunday Times policy on Eircom League

    Dear Mr. Rowan

Why does The Sunday Times not have any coverage of Irish soccer? Cork City have done very well in Europe this month and no coverage was given. Please e-mail me back with an explanation. I'm almost at the stage of stopping to buy the paper.

    Thank you
    Harry Crumb, Cork

    Dear Mr Crumb,

Thank you for contacting us about our coverage of Irish soccer, or lack of it when it comes to the domestic league scene. And my apologies for the delay in replying. This is a vexed question and one which I continue to wrestle with. We made a decision some years ago that there was insufficient interest in the domestic league to justify substantial investment of our limited resources. Obviously while there are peaks that continues to be our position though I am reviewing the situation. I think we have been a little slow to react to the change to summer football, whether that is a good or a bad thing for the league, but again we are attempting to rectify this situation. I hope you will continue to be drawn to The Sunday Times, and the sports section in particular, by the breadth of our coverage and the quality of the writing.

    With best wishes,
    Paul Rowan(Sports Editor(Irish))

I made the decision some seconds ago that there is insufficient interest in your paper to justify non-substantial investment of my limited resources. Obviously while there are pr!cks that continue employment in your position I will not be reviewing the situation.

I'm surprised he admitted it was policy, thought to be fair, did any of us buy it for their EL coverage in the first place.

All the irish broadsheets are dire with eL coverage, sure we've had these discussions about the Tribune (bte not even preview of shels last sunday) so nothing new. At least the ST are honest enough unlike the pathetic excuses from our national broadcaster in the past.

Not quite true, there was a 700 word preview on page 7 of the sports section in the Tribune. Not good enough for one second I'll admit, but they've covered LOI for the last three issues. Keep emailing the editors of papers, I'm not messing you, they definitely do take into account the pressure put on them to cover LOI.

What's coverage like in local papers? Our Derry Journal gives good coverage, match reports and news are usually on the back page, with plenty of photos. They also cover Under 21 matches.

    Is it the same elsewhere?

Despite our occasional run-ins, I think the echo is great for coverage of CCFC (and not too bad on Cobh and Limerick, compared to the nationals at any rate).

Apart from the Rioting fans with Neo-Nazi links front page headlines, the Herald in Dublin is pretty good too.

Yeah, speaking of traitors, Gill is a Scotsman and spends most of his time slagging of his fellow Scots, us and the Welsh.

I hate the Sunday Times with a passion. Totally anti-Irish paper yet bought by huge numbers of Irish people.

    Red face

Ah sure eL (shels) will soon be stepping back from its 15mins of fame. Less than a day (allowing tomorrow for postmortems) for eL/shels to disappear from mass media again...

The Indo isn't the worst, Derry McDermott is a keen Dundalk fan and talks alot of sense and is keen to show up the FAI and the league for their faults, while also praising the advances we've made. Generally a page a week for reports, plus half a page for previews plus the occasional no-reason article, eg. Today's thing on Farrelly at Bohs and the inexplicable quarter page yoke on Dundalk by McDermott. Times are preety ****, occasional give a no-reason article to the front page but **** beyond that. And the Herald in Dublin is cack. Irish Star is the way to go.

Was dissapointed with the post-mortems to the Depor match, Indo had about 3 pages to just shels before, now they only gave a report, though they did have an article in the main paper.
