also think dermot's return has given the team and club a lift, that was badly needed.
9 of the starting 11 played underage football with the club also, which is great and also a credit to managers who gave their time over the years in the underage grades

    Fairview 2-2 Janesboro

Last night demonstrated one of the things I love about football - that a better organised side can get a result from a much stronger side on paper. Finnan has worked absolute wonders with this Fairview side. Straight from the off they were pressing aggressively as a team high up the pitch and forcing the Janesboro defence into errors. Boro's starting shape wasn't helping matters either - a kamikaze old style 4-3-3 where the wide forwards were instructed to stay forward during the defensive phase. This led directly to the first goal after 5 minutes when View left winger Luca Tedde was totally unmarked and able to deliver a great cross which Wayne Colbert handled. Scanlon converted the penalty.

Halfway through the first half, Boro admitted their error and switched to a 4-4-2. They then started to dominate possession but struggled to break down a much better organised Fairview side who had a great defensive shape. Colm Heffernan in the middle was particularly impressive in this regard. Boro's choice of personnel was a problem too - Clarke and Doyle do not work well together. Clarke is not suited to playing as a number 10 and Doyle is not suited to playing as a 9. Clarke was constantly dropping off to receive the ball away from where he could be most dangerous. And Doyle was often guilty of not reacting to through balls and balls into the channels. Lynch and Clarke would have been a much better combo. Meanwhile Waters was on the left while Donnan (a central player) was on the right. Surely it makes more sense to play Waters on the right and Doyle on the left?

Clarke created something out of nothing for the equaliser early in the second half - a bicycle kick hit the bar and the rebound was headed in by Doyle. Fairview then strangely removed Madigan from left back and moved back the winger and the second goal came from his position as Doyle (now on the right!) got in ahead of him at the back post.

Then the pendulum swung in View's favour and by the time the equaliser came it was inevitable. Fairview went with three strikers and Shane Power, a sub, overlapping from right full, delivered a perfect cross for one of those three (Scanlon) to head in.

Fully deserved point for Fairview in my opinion. Only one side came with a plan and they executed it to perfection. The pressing wasn't kept up during the second half, but these are young players and that's understandable.

Boro are in absolute disarray. The number of changes in shape and player positions last night was mind boggling. The subs bench was questioning the management after only 2 minutes of play. Big changes are needed if they are to have any hope of success in the cups.

Your guess is wrong. I wouldn't be anywhere near good enough to write for that fine publication.

Thanks for the kind words JS.

And it's reassuring to hear that Madigan wasn't taken off for tactical reasons.

I was at the corner flag, Clarke's bicycle hit the bar and bounced at least a yard behind line before coming out for Doyle to head in, 100% Clarke goal
