    Bring back Mick McCarthy.

I am surprised nobody has mention this yet, indeed I am surprised I never though of it earlier, but surely he is the man for the job, he got a team to last 8? of the world cup, a team of pretty average players in fact.

He is on the dole, Trap has lost the dressing room, surely it is time to ask him back?

Let's face it he could not have done any worse that Trap and he actually had a go in the world cup and he only lost one player, not half the team.

Can we have a poll on this?

    Christ almighty.

When did he get us to the quarters of a World Cup? I must have been in a coma.

That aside, I'd have him back for 2014 campaign only initially as mentioned in plenty of threads. Low risk, high reward potential. Good man-management, communication, knowledge of our talent pool and understanding of our national psyche.

Though I didn't think it needed its own thread.

Don't be daft, he is almost as old as Trap, he has probably forgotten what a football looks like.

Mick has been playing modern Premiership football and doing a good job of it.

I always thought Tricky Colour was like a Pineapple Stu type poster haha, seems he changed in my hiatus from foot.ie, funny though, loves an aul new thread.

I'd love him back and feel if Trap was to leave, he would be our next manager.

Perhaps bring him in as a Mentor for Trap? Could see that dream team reaping rewards.

Actually what we should do it is keep Trap to get us to qualify the then dump him and let Mick take over for
    the finals.

    Best of both worlds.

That's what I would do if I were Director of Irish football. (dependant on salary).

Forget the manager, he's not the problem. The problem is that we just aren't producing enough quality players these days. Back in '94, we had a midfield of Roy Keane, John Sheridan, and Andy Townsend. Now, I'm a big Keith Andrews fan and think he was far and away our best player at the Euros, but he wouldn't have come close to even being in the squad back then.

Give the Trap bashing a rest lads. We have a crap team and he was a good enough manager to get us into the tournament, one of the greatest ever sporting achievements in history considering the poor set of players he has to pick from.

Wait another ten years, we'll have another Damien Duff, Paul McGrath, or Roy Keane come along and things will be on the upswing again.

TC, are you trying to annoy people deliberately at this stage FFS?

Are we crap though or has the standard of world football moved on?
We have less players playing in the top flight I think? Because of more foreign players?
Back in those day you had Ossie Ardiles and one other foreign player, now the place is full of them.

Anyway, back in 2002 we had:-

Given, Gary Kelly (Quinn 55), Staunton (Cunningham 50), Breen, Harte (Connolly 82), Finnan, Kinsella, Holland, Kilbane, Duff, Keane.

Is that a better team? Gary Breen? Ian Harte? Holland? a world beater?

It has to be said I think that Mick did a good job at the finals but was not so good at qualifying.

I am not trying to annoy people, just putting forward a reasonable idea.

If you can attack my post fair enough, I can dealt with that, but if you just attack me well it look like you can't fault my reasoning, doesn't it?

If you are annoyed by a well reason argument the problem is with you, not me.

I remember at the time the press saying to Mick, "Are you worried about the strength of the opposition"?

Micks reply was "Well it is more of a case of them who should be worried about us"

he went and had a go and gave the opposition something to think about, the only thing the opposition
had to think about this time was how to find a way round or through the bus we parked in front of goal.

Mick McCarthy had Roy Keane in his team. He's possibly our greatest player ever and certainly our best player since Paul McGrath. Trap doesn't have Roy Keane in his prime, he has Keith Andrews and Glenn Whelan.

Roy never played in the finals though.
Could have gone all the way if he was, but I am not sure he was 100% fit.

Mick had Kinsella and Holland no better than our centre mid really.
Stanton and Breen V Dunne and Sledge?
Kilbane and Finnan V Duff and McGeady?
Keane and Duff V Keane and Doyle

Not a great deal in it, but they managed a draw with Germany (best side in Europe) and Spain.

We were incredibly lucky to get a draw against both Germany and Spain. Duff was damn near player of the tournament and Robbie Keane was in his prime. Keane and Duff 2002 vs. Keane and Doyle 2012? Not even close. That's like comparing two of the best players in the Premiership and one mid-level player in an American Sunday league and a decent Championship striker. Oh wait.

We also had a few not so good players, and overall a bit better team but also we never lost a match and had a +3 goal
difference against as what, -8 in 2012, that's an eleven goal difference.

I still fancy we would have done better with Mick.

Also Trap got a lucky play-off draw.

Yes but he would play stephen fcekin "i really shouldn't be here"* ward as left back, seriously on that alone i would not pick him.

*double meaning, his positional sense and his being an international - quoting the priest in the brendan grace episode of father ted.

We were not lucky against Germany and Spain. We took the game to them and dominated for large amounts. Our equalisers were fully deserved on both occasions.
