DAve minnan, johnny Walsh, ken de mange, howie king, ( scored a few goals to win us the league cup v st pats what year was that?) THose were the players I grew up watching.
Was thinking about this the other night.
I probably started going to Limerick games about sixteen or seventeen years ago, can't remember exactly, and the first starting eleven I can picture in my mind would be something like:
Eddie Hickey
Albert Finnan
Ray O'Halloran
Dave Connell
Tommy Lynch
Tony Izzi
Daithi McMahon
Paul Carr
Bobby Ryan
Jason O'Connor
Barry Ryan
Now I know there's a few continuity mistakes there, like I assume Tommy Lynch and Dave Connell never played together and different fellas from different years but it's the first kinda team of players in correct positions I can think of. Feel free to fill in any gaps lads who know better!
Now look at our starting eleven last night:
Dave Ryan
Shaun Kelly
Paddy Purcell
Shane Guthrie
Shane Tracy
Barry Sheedy
Dave O'Leary
Stephen Bradley
Gary Sheehan
Rory Gaffney
Denis Behan
Now pick a best eleven from this years vintage and the mid 90s vintage....
Am I correct in thinking that an awful lot of the team would be the mid 90s lads?!

9/2/2001 - Limerick 1 - 0 St.Francis
Limerick: Fitzpatrick, Ahern, Finnucane, O’Halloran, D. Whyte, J. Whyte, Hughes, Ryan, Tobin, McCarthy, Harmon. Subs: Weldrick for McCarthy (65 mins), Flaherty for Harmon (82 mins), O’Sullivan for Tobin (88 mins).
Goals: Derek McCarthy 43.
That was my first game. We definitely have a better team today I reckon. I have no recollection of Flaherty whatsoever. There were plenty of handy players in the team back then too. Off the field though... there's no comparison at all.
The ball is round and has many surprises.
Eddie Hickey
Albert Finnan
Ray O'Halloran
Dave Connell
Tommy Lynch
Tony Izzi
Daithi McMahon
Paul Carr
Bobby Ryan
Jason O'Connor
Barry Ryan
The aforementioned team is a top notch selection. The current side badly lacks the passion and bite the likes of Albert Finnin brought to the table. That back four would have the likes of Gamble and Bradley for breakfast. Jason O'Connor and Dave Connell with the bald heads. Bunny Carr scorer of the first goal under lights in Rathbane if my memory serves me correctly.Let there be light as Father Joe said that night in his program notes. Did Daithi MacMahon end up in the USA. A Gazza type midfielder.
92 was the year, and the the match was played in Harolds Cross .
Eddie hickey
Albert finnian
Ray o halloran
Ray duffy
Declan considine
paul carr
Daithi mc mahon
Bobby ryan
kevin mc carthy
Jason o conner
tony izzi
What year was big sam manager and does anyone know how he got the job.
I think he was Youth Team Manager at Preston and wanted any gig at senior level to start a career. The papers at the time talked of the enthusiasm of the people involved convincing him to travel over and back. He's mentioned in an interview once that he looks at the standings every now and then as it was where he got his start.
What odds Scully is in the English Premier League in a couple years?
