Ireland does enter a team, via the Under-21 European Championships (which is how UEFA nations qualify.) They just never make it.
Granted it's the Olympics, but still:
Iraq 4 - 2 Portugal.
Ghana nearly beat Italy, match finished 2-2, Italians getting a late equaliser.
Whilst Paraguay beat Japan 4-3.
Never understood why we don't enter a team for the Olympics.

So how come senior players play in the Olympics?Originally Posted by Sheridan

You're allowed 3 over age players i think... its tricky for European teams to do well cos its always held just after the Euros and at the start of the domestic seasons.
Its maybe ok if you havent qualified for the Euros (like Serbia & Montenegro) this year) as you might have less injured/tired players.
The South Americans take it much more seriously tho.
I wouldnt be suprised if the Paraguyans win by the way.
Squads at the Olympic finals are restricted to players under the age of 23 plus three overage players. Some European teams prefer to stick with the under-21 squad that got them there. Apart from UEFA, every confederation organises a dedicated, Under-23 Olympic qualifying tournament.Originally Posted by brendy_éire
