Jayz, I know he was famous for his goal-kicks, but scoring a goal would be a bit too much to ask! 'Twas David Kelly, played in by John Sheridan. Well-taken goal, though obviously not up with the best. Think Kelly had missed a few good chances already in the game.

While I'd agree the Ronnie Whelan v Russia was a stunner I might have to give my vote to Robbie Keane for the German equaliser. In the last seconds of such an important match the knock down from Quinn was a little off and Robbie had to work a little magic to get it past Kahn. Hats off to Robbie for his peno v Portugal. Why didn't he take the Harte miss during normal time ???

If you are interested .. try this link for a handy little converter program.
By the way, for moviemaker .. you would need to convert the audio files to mp3.

Sorry for going way off the topic .... two headers stick out for me in the best goal category .. both from Cascarino ... the build up to his goal gainst Northern Ireland .. in the same match as Houghtons goal ... whelans sweeping cross field ball .. and then Sheedy's pinpoint cross ...

or the goal against England at Lansdowne in 1991.. where the crowd in the south terrace practicallly sucked it in .. oh the relief

I just mentioned this in another thread but it's appropriate here too.

Check out www.dermothardy.com and turn the PC volume up. It's footage of Robbie's goal in Ibaraki. I was behind the goal too. Great night in Roppongi afterwards though I hated that Foleys pub.

For the record, the techically best goals we scored were both the goals in Amsterdam in my opinion, though the end result ruins the context somewhat.

If only Aldridge had kep that volley a bit lower against Russia in '88 it would have been untouchable as our best ever goal. Anyone else remember that miss?

He does have a cap, as the FA's statistician David Barber assured him when he asked. All caps and goals from that match stand, including David Kelly's.

Agreed. Foleys was too close to the English pub too. Wall Street was where we watched most of the afternoon games. After our matches the small American style shot bars were great. Loud music and footy songs all night. The International Bar was pretty wild too.

The night of the Saudi game was special. Out there somewhere there's an Irish guy with a shaved head who videoed me and my mate headbanging to AC/DC in big afro wigs. I'd kill to get my hands on that video.

At about 4am I stood on the bar, got the bar to be quiet and announced to all & sundry that it was now 12th June and it was 14 years since Stuttgart. Cue a huge roar and 4 hours more drinking. I got a train to the airport at 8am and slept nearly all the way from Tokyo to Copenhagen. Great stuff, but remembering it all made me sick that we didn't make it to Portugal

Thanks for that, it worked a treat, and it even converted that .ram
(real media) file for me.
It is very slow though, as it takes about 10 minutes to run (or more),
as do all such converters, if they work at all, many don't.
The mpeg file is also much larger but that is not a problem really
(unless you have to download it), I am not sure why this is because
as I understand it the compression on .wmv is only about 20%
better.
Also I am not sure if it is a free program, as a 30 day limit is
mentioned for mpeg files?
I could not find a free converter for such files (.wmv) despite
extensive searching, many described as free were in fact
free-trials.
I suspect mircosoft is trying to capture this market.

My motto is "mpeg is best", it worked fine for the past 10 years
so why change?

So after racking my brain for ages trying to workout the answer to that question I now find out that the given answer was wrong. I'm having words in O' Rafferty's

Keane's goal this time around in Amsterdam was superb. Other than that McAteer's goal at Lansdowne was not just great for giving some pay back for twelve years of torture by the Dutch, but also for Harte's turn at the start of the move, I'm still convinced that he'll lose the ball every time that I see it on video.

A lot of you won't remember this, and it wasn't even a great goal, but it sticks in my mind....Ireland away to Malta in 1981, World Cup Qualifer. 2-2 three mins into injury time, and we're facing a potentially very embarrassing result as Malta were the Faroe Islands or San Marino of the time. Heighway puts in a crap cross which trickles across the box, only for Stapleton to back-heel the ball about 2 inches over the line to give us one of our not so memorable away wins.....powerful stuff for a 12 year old fan of Stapleton at the time I can tell ye!

Only 15 years old at the time and always smile when I think about how happy that goal made the whole country. My whole street ran out all at once jumping and screaming!
