    FrOm the Limerick Leader:

Limerick FC won Munster Challenge Cup final in Jackman Park on Monday thanks to a superbly taken goal in injury time by David O’Leary.

The first chances of the half fell to Cork as Jason Forde cased problems on the right wing putting in two telling crosses that flashed passed the goals but failed to be converted. Denis Behan had the best chance of the half for the Super Blues as he fired a volley just wide of the Cork City right hand upright following great work down the left from Derek O’Brien who caused no end of problems for the Cork defence.

The second half was tight once more with neither side getting the better of one another. Limerick were constantly hitting O’Brien on the left but it wasn’t until Limerick changed formation and brought on young Cian Collins that the game turned completely in Limerick’s favor.

Collins linked up well with Behan and almost scored when Behan beat Kavanagh in the Cork defense to set up Collins who brought a great reflex save from Burns in the Cork goal.

Collins returned the favor to Behan but his shot went wide. Limerick FC had the Cork City goal under siege for the final 10 minutes but failed to convert until injury time when Rory Gaffney broke down the left in injury time and rifled the ball across the goal just evading Collins and Behan, but David O’Leary was on hand at the back post to force the ball home from the tightest of angles to provoke scenes of joy from the Limerick faithful.

LIMERICK FC - David Ryan, Shaun Kelly, Shane Tracy, Shane Guthrie, Pat Purcell, Joe Gamble, David O’Leary, Steven McGann, Denis Behan, Rory Gaffney, Derek O’Brien. Subs: Corie Treacy for Guthrie, Cian Collins for O’Brien. Subs not used: Garry Sheahan, Barry Ryan, James McGrath.

CORK CITY - Kevin Burns, Ian Turner, Gavin Kavanagh, Andrew O’Connell, Cathal Lordan, Ross McCarthy, Garry Buckley, Jason Forde, Stephen Carroll, Eoghan Murphy, Stephen Kenny. Subs: Robert Lewane for Kenny, Vincent Sullivan for O’Connell

Pretty strong side for a MSC game? How do the fringe players get a chance with this guy?

It was the final. I don't see anything wrong with fielding a strong team. I'd like to see fringe players in the league cup though.

Sheahan was getting back to match fitness but keeps suffering set-backs with the leg he broke so Scully not risking him too much I guess. It would take people on here to find the negatives after winning a cup for the first time in years. Congrats to Limerick.

Its the Final will give confidence a real boost for the lads....
Dont care what cup it is its a cup won so happy days.

This is probably the team he wants to go with for the next few games accept maybe with Bradley in instead of McGann if thats the case ive no problem with him letting them settle together.

You dont get too many chances to blood young players or players coming back from injury and this was certainly an oppertunity but the gaffer thinks by winning a micky mouse cup will earn him a reprieve against a team of u19s,i was never one to look for scullys head but im edgeing towards it now!!!!!

In fairness it was a cup final, he wanted to play as strong as possible side to win it and ease his critics and get a trophy for Limerick. The friendlies against Liverpool and the Junior League XI and Bray in the league cup are better oppurtunities to blood young players.
