Really disappointing. Gamble and Bradley were ok for parts, Gaffney made an effort, nearly everyone else was all over the place. Behan just seemed off the pace big time, the whole mentality was wrong. So many wayward passes, with Waterford looking way better on the ball. Blaming the pitch is one thing, but Limerick should be well used to it. Sheahan failed to have an impact when he came on, some of the crosses from the right in the second half were truly dire. And upfront, just appalling. Losing 1-0 at half time, and the only real effort in the second was that really wayward Gaffney shot, when he had the opportunity to advance. When called to dig deep and put in the extra effort to rescue the game, just like with Longford, the Limerick team just did not have it in them.
The play for the goal really showcased some defensive weakness, the ball could have been cleared a few times if Limerick were just a bit quicker, a bit more organised. Waterford weren't really that great - they didn't exactly make a lot of chances and were pegged back for large portions - but they took their chance and never looked like they were too pressed.
Just what is it about the home games? It is so bizarre, seeing Limerick fail to perform in their last two games at Jackman Park, while dominating the opposition at two away games in-between.
I cannot imagine that Scully has many chances left to get it right in a big home game. I'm not going to be chanting for his head from the sideline just yet, but the temptation to make a change before too much of the season is gone by must be getting bigger and bigger for the boardroom. Aside from his inability to get the most out of this Limerick side and win the big games, Scully hardly seems to be a manager of Premier Division quality, which is where Limerick want to be.
If this keeps up, it will soon be time to seriously reappraise the aims and ambitions for this season. Two much easier games coming up (though Mervue got a decent result tonight), Athlone, and then Longford. A lot of work to be done in that time.
