However, I think we would all agree he is not the great keeper he once was. Age does weary them unfortunately.

It wasn't a phantom thread. Barry Glendenning of the Independent had stated that he had heard that Given was going blind, but the producers removed it from the podcast because they were worried about legal action. I started a thread on here asking if anyone had heard anything about the situation but it was locked immediately, no idea why, I wasn't trying to wind anyone up, just asking an innocent question.

If he was going blind, I can't imagine any manager putting him into a League Cup semi-final match.

So coming on here and asking if anyone had heard any additional information in regards to a news story reported by a reputable Irish journalist writing for a major newspaper would potentially expose this site to legal action from Shay Given?

    If he sees it....
Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.

I don't understand how that can be the case. If I were to come on here and report that a major journalist had said publicly that player XYZ was a homosexual, could that player then sue this site? If so, why? If that was the case, surely Kevin Kilbane could sue this site every one of you guys came on here after and Ireland match and said that we need a new left back?

Irish and British libel law is very different to that in North America, but basically yes you can be sued for quoting somebody else who has made a potentially libelous claim. Unlikely though it would be, even a shaky lawsuit with little likelihood of winning would be very expensive to defend as the onus is on the publisher (in this case dahamsta) to prove no wrongdoing. It's not the same as criticising somebody's performance.

Was Glendenning's comment published in the Independent or where did you come across it?

Glendenning didn't make any claim though, according to CR. He was repeating alleged hearsay rather than presenting a statement as fact.

    Doesn't matter, defamation is defamation.

It was always likely Guzan would get his spot back for the weekend but Shay misses out with a hamstring injury nonetheless: http://www.irishtimes.com/sports/soc...328722566.html

He said it on a podcast. It was deleted from the podcast before being uploaded to iTunes. He then made reference to it on his twitter feed.

I don't think it would be a problem for Shay but it's a fairly fine point of law, I expect clubs test keepers and other players eyesight anyway, similar tests
are to be introduced for referees in 2018.
Expect to see lot retiring in 2017

Not in the squad at all today, possibly in transfer talks?

“I think Given looked overweight and was clearly unfit during the European Championships. I don’t think that’s a forgivable crime. I wouldn’t have him."

ive no doubt that given wasnt fit in the euros. sure he dropped out of the warm up early before Croatia. However, the medical and management staff would have been fully aware of his fitness level and made a decision accordingly. they obviously felt that a non fully fit shay was still our best option. i'm sure givens poor form was dreadfully painful for him yet he didnt shy away. dunphys comments unsurprisingly are a disgrace.

he says that westwood deserves more respect? surely the 125 caps that shay picked up over 16 years deserves a little respect too dunphy?

Given did look a bit heavier during the Euros and seemed more cumbersome as a result, but the decision to select him was Trap's.

Westwood deserves no respect, he's a reserve for his club and has conceded 8 in 3 games this campaign. Respect is earned and he hasn't done anything to deserve it.

So, logic states that we should go for an ageing, reserve goalkeeper in an awful Aston Villa team, who no doubt has been poor over the past 12 months, over a younger, keen, enthusiastic goalkeeper being kept out of a mid-table Sunderland team by arguably the form goalkeeper in the league, keeping them mid-table?

Of course, there's always Mark Bunn.
