Shels progress?

First of congrats on the great result, spent the avo over here listenin on newstalk, class stuff. But i wuz wondering, assuming Shels are beat by Deportivo. Where do the enter the uefa cup? is in the 'new" group stages or what. How many more games are they guaranteed?

Congrats aswell from someone whose parents are from both Dublin and La Coruna. Hoping for a great tie. I think this has got to be one of the greatest nights in Irish football. Here's hoping that Shelbourne do for the EL what Rosenberg did for Norwegian football.

Here's hoping they don't

If Shels lose to Depor, they will go into the first round proper of the UEFA cup, furthermore, they will be seeded because they'll be entering form the Champions league with Depor's seeding.

Of course not everyone will be happy with a rival being the first Irish club in the group stages of Europe. But I'm sure by your smile you understand that if it will detract the Irish population and meedja from supporting Man Ure, etc, that can only be a good thing. I hope these games are on TV. Sadly I'll be in Ireland just after and returning to Sasana just before both legs which is a pity.

Thanks for pointing that out to me! Didn't know I said that.

Bohemians were at the same stage as Shelbourne last year with the same third round opposition waiting. Sadly they failed to Rosenberg, although there were many people around more happy to see this failure than an Irish team gain the experience from the season's future semi-finalists and be within two games of the group phase and so lift the league's profile in the eyes of the 'purists.'

I was thinking about more people turning out to watch the EL rather than f*cking off to England and Scotland every week. A team with the pedigree of Rosenberg - good though not AC Milan and maybe with a couple of Irish internationals that are thinking hey, I like Dublin, and why move to High Wycombe when I can play la liga teams occasionally and still see my friends and family and it not affect my international prospects - would bring more glamour into the league. But if you'd rather see domestic football suffer and the youth continue with their misplaced infactuation with foreign football, who am I to tell you. And Shels might still continue winning the league for seven years running. Now in club football, because of my links with the city, Deportivo is a team that really interests me, but I would rather see Shelbourne go through this time. I think Irish club football could do with their participation in the group stages.

If Shels lose to Deportivo and go into the UEFA Cup they must progress one round before they are in the group stages.

From 2004/05, ..... 40 clubs advance to the group stage. This comprises eight groups of five, with two home and two away matches per club. The winners, runners-up and third-placed clubs from each group advance to the last 32 where they are joined with the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. At this point, the traditional two-match format is used with the exception of the single-match final.

Yes UEFA Cup seems to be changed into some sort of group like system after the 1st round proper.

Shels are light years away from a club like Rosenborg. Rosenborg were able to compete in europe like dominating at home. Given how fast shels spend money be surprised they'd dominate so easily.

PJ does speak some sense about the resources being put into one club in a small country, although it comes out as a communist style government interference policy. This is done through capitalist interference instead. IFK Gothemburg (where are they now?) were heavily bankrolled by Volvo.

What makes the difference with Ireland is that the men with the money in Ireland who are willing to put it into football choose not one domestic club that will dominate for decades as in Schumi's nightmare but spend it on Manchester United instead.

Unless some major bankrollers come into eL it is inevitable that some Irish club will eventually break into the European scene and Rosenburg scene will develop here. Its just a race to see who will do it first.

Just happened that Shels have created that oppurtunity for themselves tomorrow. Theres not a lot you can do to prevent that from happening. Might not be a great thing either for that club. Look at Leeds Utd.
