Irish? Or not? Very Irish name anyway, plays for HJK Helsinki and Finland at underage level. Anyone hear about him?

They are based in GERMANY (Selcuk Tidim, aged 17, playing for St Pauli), NORWAY (Sean McDermott, 16, now with lower-league club FC Vag but linked with Arsenal) and FINLAND (Patrick O'Shaughnessy, 15 and his brother Daniel, 14).

The O'Shaughnessy brothers have just moved from small outfit FC Honka to major side HJK Helsinki, while English clubs are tracking the pair, with Patrick spending time on trial at Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers offering Daniel a trial. They have been capped at underage level by Finland (Daneil played for Finland's U17s against Northern Ireland last year) but their Irish-born dad has made the FAI aware of their progress and they could end up in the green jersey.

Yup, I've checked the online surname database and can confirm it's definitely Irish.

Patrick got sent off last night for Finland under-21s against England. No doubting his Irish heritage now!

Transfermarkt tells me his younger brother, Daniel, is with Metz in France. It also mentions a brother Tomas but nothing regarding any football career he may have.

Only took you one year and eight months to come up with that one

There was just so much sifting and checking to be done.

Little titbit here from Emerald Exiles, via the Irish Sun:

Last year, Patrick who has Europa League experience with his club MyPa, told The Irish Sun that he wanted to represent Ireland ahead of Finland.

“I feel more Irish than Finnish. I think maybe it has to do with my personality and it would make my father very proud if I played for Ireland.

“I have never had any contact from the FAI but I would prefer to play for Ireland if possible.”

“I did actually play for Finland against Ireland at Under-17 level, which was weird because I knew both national anthems when they were played before the game,” he continued.

Republic of Ireland Under 21 manager Noel King has been alerted to the O’Shaughnessy’s availability and has contacted the family to say they are being monitored.

Daniel O'Shaughnessy: Brentford sign Finnish defender

Championship side Brentford have signed Finland Under-21 international Daniel O'Shaughnessy on a free transfer.
The 19-year-old centre-back, who has been on trial at Griffin Park for the past three weeks, has signed a two-year contract with the Bees.
O'Shaughnessy began his career at HJK Helsinki but has spent the last three years with French side FC Metz.
The defender was born in Finland but holds dual nationality with the Republic of Ireland.
O'Shaughnessy is the west London club's seventh signing of the summer.
We are a bit Finn on the ground when it comes to centre-backs
