why compare results ? who cares who took the biggest scalp ?
the important thing is that an IRISH team won.

The match has been fixed for Landsdowne, they've gone for the money instead of trying to make a match

disappointing, "going for the money" means throwing in the towel in my book. 99% of teams approaching a match with a defeatist attitude will walk away as losers. hope shels prove me wrong.
do they expect to fill Lansdowne ? Deportivo don't have many household names playing for them.

IMO the league has now moved on from meer once off results & we can really only judge performances on the results over 2 legged ties.

Result last night definitely biggest for eL in last 20 odd years, surpassing Kaiserslautern as they still lost the tie.

I don't know what total irish record in recent years has been but results in Europe for this season now @:

    Played: 14 - 4 Wins, 5 Draws, 5 Defeats
    Goals: 17 For 17 Against

Not a bad record, but you cannot include Cork City's results, as they have no overall effect on our standing in Europe. They do not affect the Co-Efficient table. Which in effect IS what matters.

Yeah it was a great result for Shelbourne.I didn't see the game as was working but was keeping an eye on aertel on the net and was glad to see they won 2-0.It got plenty news coverage too on rte tv,sky sports news and it was the first item on Dave Fanning's radio show this morning. He was talking to Ollie Byrne. Will they fill Lansdowne Road for the game v Deportivo La Coruna?

I'm not talking about standing in europe or anything - just trying to stress the positive side of things...

I know they don't count towards the co-effiicient but you can't say they didn't happen. Cork wone those ties and got additional exposure for the league. I'd have to say it's been the most successful season for our clubs in europe. Two teams getting through 2 rounds and a few big scalps along the way. I'd take that any day of the week. Just a shame Bohs and Longford couldn't have produced more.

Well if you leave out City's results the record ain't so great really

    Played: 8
    Won: 1
    Drew: 3
    Lost: 4

Nothing like football supporters to bring tribal nonsense into this. Who cares whether City's win is bigger than Shels win is bigger than Bohs win. Limerick nearly beat Real Madrid in 1980 - big fcuking deal!

I really enjoyed the game last night. Shels were really impressive. The player that impressed me most was Wes Hoolahan. Thought he had a great game. As Pat Dolan said it wasn't a case of a flukey goal of someone's backside in the 89th minute after hanging in for the match. It was a controlled, patient, skillful performance and hats off to Shels for that.

I hope they do make a huge financial killing off the back of this. I don't begrudge them a cent of it. It was so fantastic to see an Irish league team so comprehensively outplay a side like Hajduk. The talk about hoofing is really unfair. At the end there was some hoofing alright - but that's fair enough. Mostly the ball was played through the midfielder. I've already heard from a few Dublin-based friends who do not go to eL games that they will go along next week. I think there might be a good crowd at it.

For the first time ever someone mentioned LOI football at work besides me.

Its usually Hurley, Hurley, Hurley and the waterford team

Anyway one of them said he had turned in to laugh at the "irish league" side.

He then said "but they were really good, i couldnt believe it. They deserved to win".

Matchs in Europe with good results gets the LOI noticed its the only way to do it. No one will believe it otherwise. This all ireland competition will help too.

You would not believe how often I have to put up with this You just can't win. Shels could go all the way to the Champions League final and you'd still get this sh!t and not half the amount of people at league games.

Theres no point in trying to win over the current generation. Lost cause. What we have to do is build up a League that the young fellas playing ball on the green at the moment will be attracted to. There's defintely a lot more City jerseys around town these days (I suppose it helps when you can actually buy them in the shops!)

Yeah, I notice a lot more people in my school following LOI clubs and not being ashamed of it. To think, we're still garaunteed a UEFA Cup round and I've seen some of the teams, a few like Dundee we could take preety handy.

How does this effect the coefficent of Shelbourne? I know for the league it's whatever coefficent we get divided by three, but Shelbournes own co-efficent before this run was 1.3 or something. We've now gained two points, so is it now 3.3 for us (At least!) for the next year?

My understanding of it is the league itself has a different co-efficent to the clubs, the league itself gains a third of every point gained by the clubs but do the clubs gain the full co-efficent? Hopefully I'm making some sense.

If Shelbourne are on 3.3, roughly, it means next year, if we do win the league, we're seeded in the first round and if we get some more points were pushing pretty close to going straight into the second round aren't we?
