So they took the actual attendance figure and doubled it basically.

There were approximately 247,000 Rovers fans in Drogheda last night, with ~700 home fans that leaves the total somewhere in the vicinity of 247,700.

The former figure sounds the more likely but the difference is a bit odd considering I believe Terry was the person doing the extratime report!

Good crowd at the Limerick v harps game almost 1000 not bad for a first division game when Limerick go up to premier they will get a couple of thousand handy especially if the club keeps on bringing in the caliber of player that there signing IMO.

Terry isn't even the name of the guy that posts here.

Don't get me wrong, extratime is great, but a Mervue official writes the match reports for them. Terry Flaherty's reports are fine, but the attendance figures are ALWAYS inflated. He's doubled the actual attendance this time.

I can imagine the conversation in the clubhouse...

    "What was the attendance tonight"

"We counted up the tickets, all the st's we sold, and all the players, officials and a few aul wans that were out walking their dogs... and we got 200."

"Right, add another hundred to that and give it to Terry, but don't give him a round number, because it will sound suspicious."

It's the official attendance given by the club.
I’m not pedantic...I’m merely overly concerned with minute details.

As League of Ireland fans, we should know that offical attendances can often be substantially different to the actual attendance. Leeson fiddled attendances for almost every match, Mervue have never published a truthful attendance figure since their debut in the LOI.

Ah right my apologies to "our" Terry then. I didn't know the other guy was a Mervue official and the poster Terry just seems to be at Mervue games a fair bit. 2 + 2 = 5.

    Finally, some closure.

Official attendances are bar some notable exceptions (and then only when it suits the clubs) absolute nonsense.

Also fans always, always, always, overestimate their own crowds.

This thread, while fun and an indication of overall trends, is, as a guide to the actual amount of people attending LoI games, about as useful as a paper Paul Green.

2 + 2 = 8 would more accurately describe what Mr. Flaherty did.

I agree, although in the case of Terryland the discrepancies were fairly large at times. When GUST took over, the figures were accurate. We scanned season tickets and counted the match tickets (obviously).

What on earth would be the benefit of 'fiddling' the number attending, especially fi you're underestimating!

This is all hypothetically speaking of course, but say a football club had banking facilities withdrawn from it and its CEO was dealing largely in cash and wanted to compensate himself more than was agreed as per his contract, one way of concealing parts of this would be to under-report revenues. "Fiddling" the attendance figures would be just one way of doing this.

"The takings at the gate for this month should have been a minimum of X. Where has the money gone if you haven't paid Y and Z?"

Of course if a person was lucky enough that the people with the authority to challenge you on this never actually ask this type of question, fiddling of attendances to cover tracks might sound unnecessary.

Other inventive ways of under-reporting or indeed complete non-reporting of revenues could include trying to convincing sponsors / makers of goodwill gesture payments to make cheques out to "Cash", offering local businesses opportunities to invest in mutually beneficial events which never materialise or perhaps my favourite, claiming four figure "administrative errors" when challenged about the proceeds of club fund-raising ventures.

The above is just a sample of what can be done, none of which we have any experience of whatsoever in Galway and this is purely hypothetical.
