    Euro 2012 Anthem

'Colm Hayes pens Euro 2012 single for Jedward': http://www.rte.ie/ten/2012/0201/jedward.html

The Colm Hayes Show is teaming up with Universal for the charity single, which will be released in May with all the proceeds going to the ISPCC.

Hayes said of the news: "Well the news is out and there's no stopping us now. Jedward have recorded The Colm Hayes Show song for Euro 2012. It's an idea we hatched about two months ago and I re-wrote the lyrics of Lipstick with the songwriters' approval and turned it into an anthem for the boys in green. It's called Put Your Green Cape On and that's all I can say so far.
At one point, I had actually been looking forward to this summer.

I think the only question is will it be worse than this?

    Gems such as
With Keane to lead us, there is nothing to fear/This time 2002 is going to be our year
    or
With the ball at our feet, we shoot, we score/This a time we'll celebrate, we'll hear the Irish roar

I quite liked "Here come the good times", you might not know it was a cover of "Here come the good times" by the same artist, A House, and basically the same song and musical arrangement.

It's not on youtube, but I found it on grooveshark: http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Here+Com...s/4n9IQN?src=5

In terms of "worst football song..ever" nothing will ever top "Watch your house for Ireland" for USA '94 which was the winner of a song writing competition on 2fm IIRC

unfortunately I'm so very sure about it.
I have a memory etched in my brain of the winner explaining it was a play on the "man on", "house", etc calls during a game, and the football following population of the country decamping to the US for the summer
The chorus went "watch your house for Ireland, goodbye Europe, hello USA"
we all died a little that day

Actually, it might be in the Reeling in the Years 1994 episode

On the plus side, it can't be any worse than that awful Man United Man song from the mid 90s.

I think at the end of the day, anyone who plays guitar or piano can tell you its fairly easy to write a relatively catchy song. The problem tends to be coming up with lyrics, and in the case of a sort of tribute song to a football team, it is even easier to be trite. Think how easy it would be to write, "with Keano, Kevin Doyle, and Jon Walters/We love Trap because he never falters" or "We've got O'Shea, St Ledger, and Dunne/They're sure to put the Spaniards on the run" or something like that. I am a bit hesitant to post this as it really is atrocious, but if you need any further evidence of this have a look at my attempt to rewrite/update the lyrics to The Game (some just ripped from the original and names replaced). Keep in mind this was 6.5 years ago and I was 15. At least I know its not just me as some of other lyrics (in Here Come the Good Times or Watch Your House, etc.) are at least sort of close to as bad.

I think if you look at the best Irish footy songs (obviously this is my opinion but I think many would agree for the most part) there is a pattern. There are a few other decent ones (and this ignores the ones by Dermot Morgan, whose comedy made the tracks rather than their musical quality) that are at least "listenable" and quite a few that are just crap.

Joxer Goes To Stuttgart - stunning in its simplicity, I think its only 4 chords, but obviously is lyrically quite good
Give It A Lash Jack - again incredibly simple, I think actually only 3 chords, not even lyrically great but catchy
Jack's Heroes - Well when you have the Dubliners and Pogues pretty much anything will sound good, not sure if they wrote it
Put 'em Under Pressure - cover of Dearg Doom and God Save Ireland, lets face it not lyrically strong
The Game - Cover of We Didn't Start the Fire
You'll Never Beat the Irish - Wolfe Tones just changed the lyrics of another song of theirs, so basically a cover
The Team That Jack Built - I actually don't know why this one is so catchy

So, basically, you can either make a cover and change the lyrics (which, in all likelihood, won't be great) or you can stay simple, try have a catchy chorus that a group can sing, and not try too hard to fit the lyrics to the music. Other than that you'd need a good songwriter (like Christy Moore).

Here's an example for Trinidad and Tobago, certainly not lyrically brilliant, but a good tune and a simple, catchy chorus

Wasn't that written by The Saw Doctors? If so, not one of their finest efforts....

I'm not sure. It was a solo singer as far as I know, one-hit wonder. It did sound like the Saw Doctors actually.

I'm not 100% but I think they wrote it and never recorded it.

God, it's even worse than I remembered. It seems it was written by the Saw Doctors, so good memory.
