Correct decision taken by GUST. Hope all members and supporters stick with the Trust now and support their fundraising efforts. Due to the lack of a proper Connacht Senior League it is not going to be easy, but it is going to be difficult for the two Galway City clubs as well. I will miss having no League of Ireland club to support this year as it is a League that I have great fondness for, for many many years.

Yeah, agree with this. Right decision IMO. GUST must get loads of supporters out to watch the u19s play to keep things going. I hope they give the FAI no excuse not to accept their license application next year. Best of luck.

I think it might. As the season goes on, you may see more Galway Utd Supporters attending games due to withdrawal symptoms from no Live Football. I'm not saying the hardcore GUST type supporter. More the casual Galway Fan who likes LOI and just wants to see a game in Terryland.

Exactly my thoughts, it's a great move by Salthill to be fair. Not good for GUST but it's exactly what Salthill needed. They will draw in a few fans and possibly see their attendances rise to about 300-400 a game anyway come mid till end of the season.

They'll still always be Salthill though. Hopefully it helps improve their crowds and I'm delighted that there will be games in Terryland next season I have to say.

Mervue should throw a spanner in the works and move back too. They already have the maroon sorted ha.

Rumour going around galway that FAI are paying salthill's rent for Terryland. Relationship between Salthill officials and a certain FAI official are obviously good but hardly fair on other clubs in and out of the league.

Maybe subsidising the rent to make sure a LOI plays in Terryland?

Is there any place for GUST, Cobh, Carlow, Tralee and maybe a few reserve teams to form an interim league for the season? Something is surely better than nothing?

    A Championship: 4 years - 8 first teams - 0 financially ruined. First Division '14: 7 first teams.
Opportunity lost for new clubs/regions to join the LoI family.

its more than likely a contra between hosting emerging talent in drom in return for Terryland which is probably fair.
I dont think the salthill committee realize themselves yet the reasons behind the sham plan that could find them out on a limb looking as if they sold their soul to keep up with the jones, they will need all the breaks they can get. Cork and Shels were the only real crowd pullers last season and there gone up

We should bring 100 to Terryland.

Was at a game in Drom last year, the attendance was something like 83 and 76 of that was Limerick fans!! I remember there was 7 Salthill fans there anyway.

Not sure if the GUST weren't wrong not to take some scrap of an agreement with one or the other sides to be awkward.

Once they're out I reckon they'll find it pretty hard to get in, reading between the lines there's a bigger picture at play in Galway, geezer seems to have a fair idea.

I don't think they're trying to fool anybody, just taking advantage of the vacum that now exists in senior football in Galway and trying to improve their own lot as a club. They can't be knocked for that.

I think it will work to some degree, only time will show how much. Even if they did hit crowds of say 350 that's pretty much a tenfold increase on what they've had at times. Sign a few players, even move up a place or two in the table, they could build some momentum. And the elephant in the room that I've not seen anybody address is why GUST think the FAI will be looking for a third Galway club in twelve months. Could be harder to get back in than they realise.

Can't see this happening without the backing and support of the FAI/league and that's clearly not there at the moment. Of course if this 16 team league being mooted does come to pass and Mervue or Salthill were to sneak in by finishing 4th this season (not beyond the realms of possibility either, outside of Limerick, Waterford and probably Longford there's not much to compete with) GUST's future could become even bleaker cos there'd hardly be room for even two Galway clubs in that scenario.
The ball is round and has many surprises.

Do you have any idea what it takes to run a league do you think the fai would even allow it, really is a foolish idea

    all i know

is i witnessed grown men in tears last night at a meeting after 37 years in the league , i wouldnt wish it on any club. A sinister plan that uses successful amateur clubs to canabalise each other to save meddlers in the background is coming to light and left a committee and an open floor, 116 to zero vote, break a link that shredded a thousand diehard loi fans hearts in the west of ireland. The people are not fools

Seriously don't think anyone has been dancing on your graves and it is kind of in your heads. A few people have asked questions and pointed out what they think are possible flaws in GUST's plans but I can't remember seeing any comments about the delight of GUFC's demise and GUST failed attempt at applying for the LOI.

It will definitely help their attendances but when United were struggling in Division 1 we were only getting about 500-600 on average. Obviously a lot of these were hardcore who won't go to see Salthill so I'd say they'll be doing well to get over 250 on average for the season.

This is the real problem that they have, not that they don't have support but they don't have any hardcore who would be willing to do the stewarding and all the match day set up that's required for them playing their games in Terryland.

Then funding the week to week running costs of the team, particularly if they've decided to start paying their players.

I think this idea will struggle to work without the support of GUST but the FAI seem happy to let them go with it anyway.
I phoned the speaking clock to hear a voice speak, it said - "At the tone you will be very much alone"
