BBM to Bury

Bury have completed the signing of former Sheffield Wednesday defender Brian Barry-Murphy.
The 25-year-old has penned a 12-month contract at Gigg Lane after being released by the Hillsborough outfit at the end of last season.

Barry-Murphy appeared 55 times for the Owls and has had spells with Cork City, Preston, Southend and Hartlepool too.

Bury had already signed four players this summer - Graeme Jones, Dave Challinor, Jon Newby and Dwayne Mattis.

BBM has greyhounds in training (like father like son) in Preston about 1/2 hour up the road from Bury. Thats why he signed with them. Also offered a deal with Bristol Rovers but turned them down (to far from the doggies

?). City made enquiries but coming home was never on the agenda. Maybe next time ?

As a Bury fan you might like to know that BBM signed for us because he wanted to work with Kelham O'Hanlon again - having worked under him at PNE. K O'H is our Assistant Manager. I know this because I spoke to him the day he signed (Monday) when he'd finished talking to our directors he came down to where the reserves were playing a p-s-f game to speak to Graham Barrow - our manager.

Yes, he may never win anything with Bury and it's doubtful we'll ever qualify for Europe but the difference he is playing in a major European League whereas Cork City, with all due respect, play in a poorer league and as one of the major clubs in the EL you should qualify for Europe on a regular basis. Sadly we have to get past the Arsenals, Chelski's and Stretford United PLC's of this world. You just have Shelbourne, Bohemians and Longford!

So that's that agreed then. Seriously, like all City supporters, we keep tabs on all of our exiles who go to England hoping to make the "big-time", most of whom end up, with all due respect like, at the likes of Bury. BBM was a promising youngster who left City in the year 3 BC (before chips). How was he to know of the glory he would miss out on? I honestly don't think BBM would get on our first eleven now.
Best of luck in your new season, and of course I wish BBM every success. I'll be looking out for your results. I have long believed that we (irish clubs) have a huge amount in common with English lower league clubs. Our common enemy is, as you say, the Chelskis, Man Us, etc. It must be even more difficult for yourselves, living so close to the monster.

Sorry to burst your bubble there sunshine but the Premiership is a completely seperate league from the one your lot play in.
I know it's a nice fantasy for you but in reality, Bury wouldn't last 15 minutes against Cork City FC in a competitive game.
You're so far off the pace in England that the LDV Vans Trophy is as much as you aspire to. Who's ever heard of Radcliffe Borough ffs!?!

You are quite right there mate - The Stretfords, Arseholes and Chelski's play in the Barclaycard Premier league whereas Bury play in the Coca Cola League II - Well spotted mate. Glad to see your not asleep over there!

Seriously though, don't flatter yourself mate. I have watched EL football and it's just about Conference Standard and no more. If the players at EL sides were that good they'd all be playing over on this side of the water. The ones who make it are few and far between which is why the ROI side have so many "qualified through their granny" players (I'm not having a go at the ROI side they just use the FIFA rules to their advantage). Players with big reputations in the EL haven't exactly set the English League alight now have they?

Only a few english players that come to the eL are successful here too so I could say exactly the same.

How many internationals of any description (youth, u-21, full, ladies whatever...) are there at Bury?

i think that Cork City's fantastic results against Malmo and Nijmegen prove without any doubt that we wouid have absolutely NO PROBLEM beating the likes of Bury, with all due respect of course

How many internationals of any description (youth, u-21, full, ladies whatever...) are there at Bury

At the moment we just have the one full international - Terry Dunfield of Canada and one ROI U-21 international Dwayne Mattis. Our keeper Glyn Garner has also trained with the full Wales squad. In recent seasons we have also had Bhaichung Bhutia who is the captain of the Indian national side and Lutel James of St Kitts & Nevis. We do have a fine record of internationals going back a bit further with the likes of Wales Ian Hughes, Northern Ireland's Phil Hughes & Derek Spence and further back we have had full Scots, ROI and England internationals.

I'm sure you'll agree that it's not a bad record for a club in a small town like Bury.

PS - A face (?) We try because we have a proud history. We have been in existence since 1885. We have won the F.A. Cup twice and hold the record win in an F.A. Cup Final (6 - 0 V Derby County. A score which has stood for 101 years) which saw us win the F.A. Cup without conceding a goal. Our other win was 4 - 0 v Southampton. They were a long time ago but we have still won them! We spent 30 odd years in the old first division and have won the Lancashire Cup on numerous occasions. We have also won the old second division (winning every home game which has never been equalled), the old third Division twice, the most recent being in 1996/97 which gave us two seasons at the second level of English football. We have had numerous promotions and reached the play offs on several occasions too as well as reaching the play off final at Wembley in 1995. We have sold five players for in excess of a million � sterling and at the end of the season 2002 / 2004 we were in the top 20 of points scorers in the history of the English League. It's not a bad record to have and thats why we try!

Lads, the fella came on to try and explian why BBM signed for a team. he gave his opinion on the eL. He may or may not be right. Why knows and who cares. I support City, he supports Bury, 2 teams who are highly unlikely ever to meet.

Is it any wonder though that fellas look down there noses at the eL when they hear some peoples attitudes.

FACT. We are playing in Europe. Have performed fantastically all season. So why are fellas getting all hed up because some guy who (all due respects) hasnt a clue of our league gave his opinion.

As for BBM, he is never likely to return to City. As mentioned above, the greyhounds are his primary interest, and football is a handy sideline to him.
