Johnson's fellow midfielder Jeff Hendrick remains on course to be fit for the play-offs.

I imagine Arter would have a good chance of replacing Hendrick in the event he were not to make it.
Gibson and Whelan probably can't play in the same team.
Probably not, but I think Gibson is the best bet to replace Whelan if he picked up a knock or was even playing really poorly. I like Arter but I'm not sure a major championship is the best time to get a feel for international football. Give him a good run against The Netherlands and take it from there I suppose.
I'm not disagreeing with TOWK for the sake of it but I'd quite like a deep lying pair of Wheland and Gibson, with Hendrick and McClean wide, and Arter and Hoolahan further forward. Won't happen as it'd require only picking one of Long or Walters and dropping McCarthy. Nor would I consider it as a first choice, but I think they are more compatible than people may think.
FYI, I think Arter should make the trip and I'm really warming to Byrne. Harsh, but maybe mcGeady should be left at home.
Hendrick could be back in contention for the weekend. It will be a tough ask to get back in the side given the run they've been on but good to have him fit again anyway from our point of view.

Facing stronger opposition in the group stages is another shielding midfielder, even if Ireland and Derby’s Jeff Hendrick also carries a goal threat. Following strong performances by Harry Arter and Stephen Quinn in last Friday’s friendly international against the Netherlands, positions in the Irish midfield have never been so fiercely contested. Hendrick has been trusted throughout the qualifiers however, and has impressed Martin O’Neill with his discipline and tactical intelligence. Despite plying his trade in the Championship, Hendrick has both the mobility and tenacity that can often be missing in the Irish middle third.
Such attributes bode well for games against higher-quality opposition, where Hendrick has the ability to break up play and move the ball well further forward. Having played more minutes than all but a few first-team regulars – Jon Walters, John O’Shea and Robbie Brady – in the qualifiers, we are sure to see plenty of Hendrick in action in France this summer, where managers and scouts may also decide he has the necessary qualities for top-flight football.
another "shielding midfielder"
What does that mean in Hendrick's case?
A holding midfielder?
Not a fully fledged holding midfielder as such, more versatile but can shield defensively by winning the ball at CM?
or a midfielder who can shield the ball well?
Hendrick's emergence in this campaign has definitely helped McCarthy and Whelan in making us more solid. I agree with all of the points about mobility, tenacity and tactical awareness but I'm not sure that 'shielding midfielder' is the right term for him, only if it actually means that he's shielding his full back or the actual holding midfielder(s).
In the context of that article he seems to indicate that Hendrick is "another" holding or defensive midfielder, as he was writing about Portugal's holding midfield options previously. The fact that the majority of Hendrick's work for us has been, and probably will continue to be, of a defensive nature, I suppose his overriding point is solid enough.
its being reported that derby have rejected a £3m bid from burnley for hendrick
Middlesbrough and Fulham the other clubs mentioned as being interested. Nothing to get too excited about outside of the prospect of PL football for a season (at least). £3m was never going to cut it though, a ridiculous offer given Derby are under no pressure to sell.
He was linked with Crystal Palace over the weekend too. That could be a good move for him if it came off.
The ball is round and has many surprises.
So... Burnley are the only team to make a bid. £3m. Which they subsequently increased. For Dale Stephens.
Pretty disheartening but expected.
Sean Dyche already signed Stephen Ward as a Premier League player.
Burnley, Hull, Sunderland, West Brom and Stoke are the only teams I could picture an Irish player signing for, and if reports are to be believed, Sam Allardyce will be taking over the England job.
There are seemingly only two options for Irish players: move laterally from an upwardly mobile Championship team to a Premier League team fighting for survival, or get lucky and hope Tony Pulis signs you.
The only way an Irish player plays under a foreign manager in the PL these days is if they are already at the club. Unless you are playing under Roberto Martinez. And he's practically British anyways.
The more money in the PL, the more foreign managers and the more foreign players, the less opportunities for Irish players.
Two options. Stay in the Championship or start considering opportunities on the continent.
Of course it doesn't help that inflated transfer fees seem to be the norm for every player who isn't Irish. At which the buck stops.
I think 6 to 10 million is a fair play for him.
I think Burnley will get him and he will finally get the move to PL. I hope Brady gets his move, if for nothing else that Oneill can no longer be saying we are a team mainly made up for Championship players.
I'm a bloke,I'm an ocker
And I really love your knockers,I'm a labourer by day,
I **** up all me pay,Watching footy on TV,
Just feed me more VB,Just pour my beer,And get my smokes, And go away
I'd love to know what offers exactly are on the table when stuff like this gets to the media.
Is it a case of "Burnley are the only ones interested" or "Burnley are the only ones interested that we'd consider". Don't get me wrong, I don't think there will be offers from Dortmund Valencia or Marseille on the table, but I'd love to know if there is ever any continental interest, or do the players ever suggest to their agents they'd be open to a move to a continental league.
Hendrick looks to be the type of player who would flourish in a French or German league, more than a Meyler or Quinn type per se.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!
