Someone in the FAI needs to keep a lid on things IMO
Very often you'll find it's the candidates who leak that they've been approached. It helps keep them in the public eye and alerts other parties to their availability. In this instance though I reckon it was just that Fanning rang his agent and found out. Something simple and not necessarily leaked by the FAI.

Queiroz already has a wc 2014 ticket, I don't see how he can be mentioned for our job. Whilst Portugal have to be Europe's leading serial under performers at tournaments, considering the quality of their teams but Queiroz was a dampner all by himself.

According to recent editions of the BBC 'Gossip column', Meulensteen has been offered a backroom post at Fulham, whilst paradoxically MO'N is the favourite to take over if Jol gets the boot...

The clamour for Meulensteen is bizarre. Great coach, by all accounts, but no managerial experience.

Total Man Yoo effect. If a former Utd kitman expressed an interest, he'd be a 12/1 slight outsider.

Do they really underachieve though? They should definitely have landed Euro 2004 on home soil with no outstanding team present. Since then, though, their exits have been to teams which would definitely have been considered favourites against them...

WC06... Lost to great French side in semi final (0-1)
Euro08... Lost to decent German side in Q/F (2-3)
WC10... Lost to great Spanish side in last 16 (0-1)
Euro12... Very unlucky to lose to great Spanish side in semi final (0-0, p2-4)

They've generally had nice footballers but lacked a real goalscoring No.9... the likes of Postiga, Nuno Gomes and Pauleta were never really world class which made them quite limited against the best sides. Now that Ronaldo is filling that role and more, I'm not sure they have the quality of midfielders that they once had.

Very good read on King. Stating the obvious but I really hope the two games go well for him. Pity Brady isn't available seeing as he seems such a fan and a blow with Westwood also, just as he has got his club career back on track.

Yeah I suppose they have done much better than a bottler reputation.
I'd regard losing against Greece as underachieving, even if they were finalists.
WC 2002 they were quite pathetic, they had much better quality than our lot, espec without Roy Keane.
WC 2010, I know they were beaten by Spain but that doesn't excuse their gutless approach.
Can't really moan about all their other tournaments at all.

    Oh dear!!

Here are his stats form his last job at Forest:-

    P7 W1 D2 L4

Both the manager before and after were miles better, they were play off contenders, he was a relegation contender, if not certainty!!!

Martin O'Neill's record overall at Sunderland wasn't that great to be fair. It's been a while since he did anything decent and that was only by spending big at Villa or when he had John Robertson by his side.

Roy Keane still has the potential to be a good manager if he can learn to park his ego.

Apart from that the choices out there are slim enough.

There is no chance Hiddink would take the job. His annual salary at most of his recent jobs was +5 million. He'll also take one look at our pool of talent and say no thanks. Like a lot of managers, the guy isn't a fool. He isn't going to risk his reputation.

Whoever gets the job, I hope they make sensible team selections - please no more strikers playing on the wing, playing obvious inferior players instead of superior players that are left on the bench or not even in the squad, communicate properly with players and media and aim to play in a structured manner that have some sophistication (i.e. not just hoof and chase).

Elroy, did you read Brian Kerr's preview? He was going on about how King won't be making such bizarre selections. Then what happened?!

I think the FAI should stipulate in the new managers contract that strikers on the wing means a stackable offence.
