    R.E.M Split

Seems R.E.M have decided to call it a day with a bit of dignity.

"We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished," the statement continued. "To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

They've intermittently produced some classic albums of the 31 years of their existence.

I'd highly recommend "I Feel Fine - the best of the IRS years" which is a very good compilation of their work from 1980 to 1987.

Most are aware of the Warner Brothers output from 88 onwards.

You're welcome lads, cheers for the tunes.

I'd open the aul wallet for a collection of unreleased tracks from their glory years (ala Screaming Trees.) Just sayin'.

Ah yeah, saw them in 09, one of the best live shows I have ever been to. Simply amazing.

thirty. one. years. fantastic achievement and good luck to them. will always be more or less a casual fan but i've listened to plenty of their early stuff. intelligent band with an instantly recognizable sound.

Liked plenty of their stuff but never really investigated anything beyond the "hits". I think Stipe's persona / lyrics never really resonated with me, and this stopped me from getting a bit more into them.

I was becoming a really big REM fan around the time of Out Of Time and Automatic, and love Wolves Lower and stuff like that as well as some of the later songs, but I always tended to just listen to what I happen to come across rather than seek out their music and this is squarely down to Stipe, I remember an interview with him around the time of those albums I mentioned, and the guy really put me off the band, he just spouted some awful, self obsessed and endless meandering pompous nonsense, it really really was a load of tripe, it was the first interview I had seen of them and it really put me off them. Dont think I bought another album of theirs after that, except Monster maybe.

I was thinking about it over the weeks. I reckon I'll sort something soon.

Murmur is one of the greatest debuts of all time and New Adventures In Hi-Fi by far their most underrated release. Great live show too, I only saw them once just after they released the risible Around The Sun, but they were in full flow.

Fair play, great band. Over the past decade it has been decidedly uncool to like REM. But Nirvana, Pavement, Radiohead and a whole slew of bands owe them an enormous debt.
