Retirements after EURO 2012

1. Richard Dunne, Damien Duff

4. I can see Shane Duffy if he gets back to where he was playing a part. Conor Clifford could make the step up. Can't think of anyone else at the moment

I think Duff will keep playing. He still seems to love playing for Ireland.

Dickie Dunne the DunneyMonster could be gone alright unfortunately. Thats the sad thing.

I don't really see many coming through. But if 2 of clifford/meyler/mccarthy/obrien make the breakthrough in the next couple of years and no one retires I think we will have a really good chance for Brazil.

I think Given may retire.

cant see anyone retiring really except maybe Kilbane.
if the players feel they can still fulfil a role and we have a chance of qualifying then what player wouldnt want to play in a wc in brazil?

I reckon retirements will depend on whether we qualify or not, if we do I think Dunne, O'Shea, Kilbane, Duff & maybe Given will retire and if we dont I reckon they'll give it one more go...
I cant see Keane retiring either way

Hopefully we'll see Meyler & Cunningham back if they can stay fit

Given, Kilbane, Dunne, Duff, and Keane will all retire I think. I don't want anyone to retire.

McCarthy, Coleman, Meyler and Wilson I would expect to break into the team in the next qualifying campaign. Cunningham, Brady, and Clifford would be nice but who knows with them.

If they were all to retire I wonder who would take over the captaincy? O'Shea would be the obvious one, but he could retire too.

I can only see one max. two of the five you suggest retiring and that would be most likely Kilbane and maybe one surprise one.
None of the other 4 are in immediate threat of losing their place in the starting 11 and all seem to enjoy playing for Ireland.

Hopefully J O'Brien can continue his good form at West Ham and maybe start playing in CMF.
I agree with McCarthy, Meyler and Wilson being next in line and hope Cunningham can make a good recovery and comeback.

The future looks bright considering the talent mentioned above. What we don't need is to lose too many experienced players at once. To lose Given, Dunne, Keane and Duff in a short period of time could have a big effect on our performances.

As expressed many times before, I just don't see some of these lads hanging on for another campaign - nor would I begrudge them retirement. Don't underestimate the friendship duffer, robbie, dickie and shay would have, and with Killer, there is a massive gap between them and the rest of the squad in terms of longevity. I'm not for one minute trying to make out that they wouldn't be first choice (3 definitely would) - what I'm doing is looking at things logically in my mind.

I would like to see Killer retire the hero that he is. There are replacements available (Ward ultimately won't be one of them) and I'd fear the longer he hangs around, the less likelihood that the replacements get blooded - I'm thinking Cunningham and Ferguson here.
The same goes for Duffer. At one point on Tuesday, he got the ball about 15m into the Russian half, and he was pressured all the way back to Shay (passing not running). His control is immaculate, but he's not the same duffer. Keith Treacy needs game time. Robbie Brady will get game time, McGeady is a first choice for Trap. Not to mention Stephen Hunt.

In theory, Duffy, Coleman, Foley, Cunningham, O'Dea, Ledger, McCarthy, Clifford all get first team football at as high a level as possible and they become mainstays of the squad or further their footballing education. They would be upgrades of McShane, Killer, Green, Gibson.

I would be an advocate of changing captain after this campaign, regardless of whether Robbie retires or not, simply as he isn't going to be first choice. He certainly has a lot to offer, but the captain needs to be the fulcrum of the team, or at least a pivotal player who wouldn't be prone to being dropped.

Depends on who is in charge of the team, and what the personnel in the squad is. Ledger is one of trap's chosen, and I'd say he'd be high up on the list (although I have to say, O'Dea has impressed in the games he's played - and his partnership with Dunne is solid). Whelan if he were to remain in the side would surely be considered.

Irish players should not retire. They should fade away with dignity. We don't have enough quality players for the said players to be retiring will nilly.

With the deliriously grateful thanks of the nation, and in no particular order - Eamon Dunphy, Richie Sadlier, Dion Fanning (actually make that the entire Indo "sports" crew), Newstalk's "sky league"/football people. Like putting 1,000 solicitors into a mid-Atlantic ship with no lifeboats or rescue services available and sinking it, it's a good start.

Duff/Keane/Given/Dunne I think are the kind of players who'll want to keep playing for as long as they're selected and would only consider retiring if they were being benched. Thats simply not going to happen to any of them for the next 4 years and all 4 are probably still our 4 best players so it would devastate us if any did.

Kilbane will likely retire and I reckon that'll be all. People generally don't retire coming into a world cup campaign, it is the bigger one after all.

I say Kilbane because I think Trap already wants rid of him and combined with his age it would make sense to formalise that. Ideally he'd get a last appearance in a friendly in early 2012 perhaps. Or more ideally a crunching 92nd minute tackle on Iniesta in the Euro 2012 final to maintain our 1-0 lead.
