    Ray Parlour's Missus

    Background as I understand it.

Ray and his Wife split up, she gets two houses worth 1million, a 250,000stg lump sum and maintenance payments for her support and the support of their two children, in the order of 30,000 per month.

Anyway, she decides that as the wife of a successful footballer this would not keep her in the lifestyle she's become accustomed to, and sues for a percentage of all his Future earnings.

She won, 37% of his money will now go straight to her (on top of the money he would have been paying in child support).

I know there's a precident in cases where partners put a lot of work into a common business and deserve a cut, but does anybody else think this is a ridiculous precident to set by the presiding judge.

Common sense counts for nothing in courts. That's why burglars can sue for accidents they have in people's homes.

It's the fault of the legislators for drawing up ill prepared bills.

He should go on the dole now and look for a third of her earnings.

as i said Conor, if a spouse puts work into their partners business, they are (and should be) entitled to a cut of future earnings resulting from the improvements they made.
AFAIK this is usually worked out by looking at increased profits after the marraige and the time put in, ideas put forward etc., and I admit I don't know the ins and outs of the case, but I don't see where her input could have contributed in the same manner when he's a footballer.
Was she his agent, coach, manager, trainer or physio, not to my knowledge.
37% of all the guys's future earnings directly to her seems excessive IMO, regardless of how much he is paid.

To be fair, she said that he is now a successful footballer partly because she put him back on the straight and narrow. It's been widely accepted that there was a serious drinking culture within Arsenal Football Club before the arrival of Arsene Wenger. Ray Parlour was virtually unheard of in the early 90's
She used this as the basis for her case and therefore must have been able to convince the judiciary that it was bona fide.
Part of the ruling was that she must save a large sum each year to prepare for the time when his earnings dip.
He may not end up paying too much more than any other wealthy father over the duration of the maintenance period for his children.

This is only for the next 4 years.
It's to compensate for previous years and to provide for future years.

What got me was the fact that she was already receiving about 250k a year and wanted more, add the kids maintenance on top of that plus the two houses she got originally.

This is being seen as a landmark case and is being hailed as a victory by women's rights groups. Personally I think it's disgraceful. So what if he was a boozehound and a party boy before he met her. The judge should have taken one look at her dressed from head to toe in Burberry and thrown her claim out.
