lads check out the irish times poll on wether mc'carthy is irelands greatest ever manager...who the hell are the 49% of respondants who think he is..thats what i want to know

just goes to show there are some right dumbasses out there!

It can only be between McCarthy and Charlton.

Mick McCarthy - got qualification for WC with average squad, when only one team qualified automatically and with a majority of Irish players.

Mr. Charlton - got qualification for WC with some outstanding players, when two teams qualified automatically and with a majority of English born players.

Only one winner there for me.

In another era, Liam Tuohy was shoved aside, forgotten and treated badly along with Brian Kerr and Noel O'Reilly. Kerr and O'Reilly must take some credit for the young players who play with such confidence in the senior side today: their achievements at under-age level brought a new type of confident player into McCarthy's plans and in Damien Duff and Robbie Keane, Ireland have players experienced in tournament football with the technique and the temperament to prosper next summer.

McCarthy did not treat Kerr and O'Reilly the way Charlton treated Tuohy, (as technical director, Kerr was part of the official party in Tehran this week) but at times Ireland's manager seemed to distrust them for the popularity which he had not yet achieved. It would be nice if he could grow comfortable with some outside his own circle who have a great deal to offer Ireland. Brian Kerr has not been mentioned much this past week by the ra-ra boys among the cheerleaders but his work for Ireland continues and it serves this Irish manager well.

And no i am not joking! He was a diabolical decision away from qualifyinf for the World cup in 1982(?) when it was not cool to play for Ireland at all at all, even for the genuine Irish men.I mean i was reading some excuses the other day, the worst of which was a player caught his finger in his car door so he was unable for international duty.
