    under 19s

The Republic of Ireland Under-19s will play their first game of the season this afternoon (Tuesday) when they face Serbia at the Stara Pazova in the first game of this week's double-header friendly (4.30pm).

Ireland Head Coach Paul Doolin has only recently finished with last season's squad which reached the semi-finals of the European Championship in July.

Eight members of the 18-man squad which played at the finals in Romania are underage again for the upcoming qualification campaign.

Today's game, followed by another meeting between the nations on Thursday, will serve as preparation for the first phase of UEFA qualifiers taking place in Bulgraia from 6-11 October. Doolin's side will vie in Group 2 with Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and hosts Bulgaria for the two qualifying berths into the elite stage.

The Irish boss will use these two matches to assess his options outside of the eight players from last season for those qualifiers.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND U-19 SQUAD: Matthew Gledhill (Portsmouth), Alan Smith (Glasgow Rangers), Aiden O'Brien (Millwall), Ben Glasgow (Arsenal), George Smith (Southend United), Kenny McEvoy (Tottenham Hotspur), Michael Keane (Manchester United), Neil Byrne (Nottingham Forest), Daniel McGuinness (Bray Wanderers), Paul George (Celtic), Sean Kavanagh (Belvedere), Sean McGinty (Manchester United), Shane Byrne (Leicester City), Tommie Hoban (Watford), Joseph Rafferty (Liverpool), Callum Webb (Arsenal), Bradley Garmston (West Bromwich Albion), Kealan Dillon (Derby County), David Murphy (Reading), Ryan

Good to see Waterford lad Kenny McEvoy moving up to this level. He's still only 16 but he's going to be a real talent. He's good mates with my nephew and he gave a lot of time in the local gym over his holidays. One to definitely keep an eye on.

    Good result.

Is that the first time we've had a Glasgow Rangers club player turn out for one of the international sides? Im sure this has been covered in other threads, I just cant recall the answer.

No, he's been in a few of the underage squads as well since he moved there.

As far any others in recent times I dont think there was - if you want to know what Rangers fans think go onto some of their forums - mixed reaction but generally positive especially on this one

Alex Stevenson played for the senior side in the 1930s while with Rangers (I only know as he managed Pats in the 1950s)

PS... fairly ballsy move by a kid to sign for Rangers. Hope it works out for him

I know another young goalkeeper who has been over to Rangers recently on trial. Think he will probably sign for an English club but they are certainly branching out and are covering the whole of Ireland now.

Yeah, he is mentioned in that thread by one of the posters

Alexander Earnest Stevenson was born in Dublin and played for us in 1932/33 and 1933/34. He was capped for the Football Association of Ireland (Irish Free State) team while in his time at Rangers. I guess they are correct in that he will be the first player to be involved a 'Republic of Ireland' banner. Still the FAI are the same association.

Interestingly Stevenson went on to alternate playing for Northern Ireland and the Free State. Capped 7 times for the FAI and 19 times with the IFA

U-19 squad unveiled for Slovenia friendlies

    Code:
    Sean McDermott (Arsenal),
    Alan Smith (Rangers),

    Michael Keane (Manchester United),
    Sean McGinty (Manchester United),
    Neill Byrne (Nottingham Forrest),
    Derrick Williams (Aston Villa),
    Bradley Garmston (West Bromwich Albion),
    Connor Morrisey (Manchester City),
    Ben Glasgow (Arsenal),

    John O'Sullivan (Blackburn Rovers),
    Kealan Dillon (Derby County),
    Samir Carruthers (Aston Villa),
    George Smith (Southend United),
    Shane Byrne (Leicester City),
    Niall Lanigan (St. Patrick Athletic),

    Connor Smith (Watford),
    Graham Burke (Aston Villa),
    Paul George (Celtic),
    Sean Murray (Watford),
    Aiden O'Brien (Milwall)
Strong looking squad (emboldened players were in the first squad). A lot of players coming back in from the last campaign. Could be another good season for them.

Ben Glasgow is a right-back according to the Arsenal sites: http://arsenalyouth.wordpress.com/2n...s/ben-glasgow/

His granny left him a nice message up there.
