so how does this work, can I outline my strategy, or do people just vote on who they think has a better team?

You can write your strategy if you want. It's not a requirement.

Polls are open for 1 week only so we will take the totals at the end of July 19.
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.

I've been giving this some thought, and I'd switch Brady and Whelan in central midfield, and play Whelan opposite Reid. They've played together as a central midfield partnership, so I think he'd anticipate a threat from Reid earlier than Brady. Brady will sit on the half way line and hassle McLouglin when he's in possession, pressuring the Portsmouth midfielder into losing the ball, but the majority of the work done by the captain will be creative, looking to thread the ball through to Aldridge on the ground, or a long pass out to and advancing Heighway.
The Liverpool winger is looking to cross at Robinson in the air, or to cut inside to shoot. With Kelly opposite him, I think Heighway's experience will come into play here, running at the Fulham full back at every opportunity. Aldridge is playing on the shoulder of the two centre halves, while he's losing the physical battle I think his superior pace will let him exploit the space beyond the penalty spot. Robinson is making the best of his physicality, looking to either nod the ball down for Aldo or direct the header goalwards.
With Duff the clear attacking threat on the left, McGoldrick will sit a little deeper than I have in the lineup above, I'm not giving him any space to move into. Letting Duff cut inside is not an option, keep him on the sidelines, and let Irwin close him down. Irwin has played in a Champion League Final, as well as multiple national cup finals and he's going to be as well equipped to deal with the winger as any Irish full back. At centre half, Kinnear is the organiser and Dempsey is the workhorse (think Cunningham and O'Brien). Both have played in European finals, and Dempsey pushes forward as an added threat from set pieces, he's scored in a European final against Real Madrid.
With Heighway pushing forward Brennan is playing on the 12 yard line, although naturally right footed, he has played at left full for club and country, and I think Irwin is better suited to deal with the threat of Duff on the opposite berth. Brennan's main outlets are going to be to Whelan, or to release Heighway, with the occasional long pass to Brady when he moves beyond McLoughlin.
