    I think it is disrespectful to their achievements to say the best players have been left out of the squad, hopefully they will have the doubters eating their words (as you were when you criticised the selection for the elite phase!).

    Fair enough I didnt mean to be disrespectful to williams I was simply pointing out that if McGinty was good enough to be a first choice in 2009/10 season for the under 19s and again at the beginning of 2010/11 and has had a good club season winning an fa youth cup then it seems unfair he has been droped for missing a tournament because of the Fa youth cup final. The previous season williams and devine were in an Fa youth cup for villa against cliffords chelsea. Im sure they would have had to miss out on international football if there had been a clash.I hope williams, devine , burke and drennan at villa all get a chance with villa this season and have great careers.

    I absolutely did eat my words and admitted to it after they qualified and I hope I do again. I just think it is terrible that doolin has now created the impresssion that duffy, mcGinty and Brady and McEleney do not want to play for their country which is something that is likely to follow them for the rest of their careers

    Well, McEleney had opportunities to demonstrate that he wanted to play for Ireland at this level and failed to do so. That doesn't mean he has turned his back on Ireland.

    If there is a 'stigma' likely to follow, that depends on the attitude of the players. It is rare that a 'stigma' affects the fortunes of a player with a genuine interest in playing for his country. Two players in particular who had problems at youth level, Ireland and Stokes, were given every and some opportunity respectively, to alter their image.

    Good point about Ireland and Stokes.

    Mark O'Brien didn't make the squad either I think. He's supposed to be very good I thought.

    A team good enough to beat Italy 3-0 must be decent enough though.

    As far as I remember in 2009/2010 McGinty was first choice for the Under 17's (captain) and he played only a few games for the under 19's, and just because a player did well last season doesn't mean he will this season. I actually think McGinty is a good player and if anything he should be in ahead of one of the peripheral players who are in to cover the left back position, as he has played left back for the Manchester united academy last season, however like I said Williams is outstanding and as fas as I knew he was in ahead of others at the start of the campaign but he was injured.

    As far as the other lads, it seems clear from Duffy's dad's post that the lad obviously has his own ideas about how a manager should treat/manage the boys, this may have contributed to why he isn't in. If I had the chance to play for my country I would do a bleep test every day if that guaranteed my selection- buts that just me. I had thought previously that Duffy and Brady were going to be selected for the under 21's and that's why they are not in. I never got the impression from Doolin that he was suggesting these 4 lads didn't want to play, I heard him say that he went with what he thought was the best team. But everyone is going to have a problem with some selection.

    As for your question earlier I heard that Kevin Knight has been approached by a number of clubs in Scotland, I hope he gets somewhere as he is a good lad and he had a good season with Leicester last year.

    Anyway I am off to pack my suncream for Romania...anyone else going?

    I wish this team all the best. Its a shame that the lads being spoke about on here not been picked, Doolers would need to cop himself on. I think he has done a great job on getting us to the Finals but once again Ireland will be at a major tournament without some of its best players.

    Have to say that nothing surprises me about people who work for FAI.

    Overall, the structures are a complete joke. The emerging talent system is a joke. The coaches are also Jokes. The vast majority of the FAI coaches only start snooping about Kennedy Cup teams a number off months before the Kennedy Cup just to be seen to be doing something.

    I have still to see many players emerge from these systems. We need to start asking the FAI some serious questions about these structures. Pointless and a complete waist of time and resources.

    I would advise anybody on here with talented youngsters or potential players for the future Dont let these loosers wreck their prospects.

    Lets hope we dont see defections to the North from both sides of the border.

    Any idea why he was released? I thought he had been doing well also.

    Duffy's dad seems a total helicopter parent. Doolin's comment was probably laid squarely at Brady and, perhaps, McEleney too. Unless he knows something we don't, Duffy is just not in the team because Doolin is sticking with the winning team.

    I don't think there's too much to worry about. Irish nationality doesn't admit anyone an entitlement to declare for the IFA.

    I wouldnt be too sure about that.

    Your 100% when you say that but alot of people have been born in the North who live in the south especially in places like Donegal, Altnagalvin Hospital in Derry has seen hundreds if not 1000's of births from people from across the border.

    Like Shay Given, of course.

    Sure, I know well. I know quite a few of them.

    Never? What about when he stated that he wanted players who want to play in the aftermath of the discussion of these three? The implication being that they don't want to play, of course.

    Has there been any explanation as to why Brady was beyond contact? I see some in the media are casting it as a snub with parallels being drawn to Stephen Ireland: http://www.thescore.ie/is-robbie-bra...71111-Jul2011/

    If anyone's interested, we had a chat with John O'Sullivan about the upcoming tournament. Lovely fella, real honest and open.

    I find this quote very interesting;
    “It was great to start playing with them, the reserves is much more about football, about playing football. Youth level is all about the physical aspect of it, everyone is out there trying to impress, while in the reserves you just get the ball and play.”
    It doesn't say a lot for the academy system in England when the youth level is "all about the physical aspect of it". If anything the physical aspect should be what steps up when they move to the reserve level with the skills and footballing being the priority for the youths.

    Building strength must be one of the main things at youth level over there while the players are still growing, whereas by the time you get to reserves you're an adult. I'd imagine that's the reasoning behind it.

    That doesn't really sound like what he's saying though. He's seems to be suggesting the games themselves are a lot more physical at youth level. There's obviously going to be strenght programmes in a fully professional environment, although I don't really think younger players should be trying to build a lot of muscle while their bodies are still growing.

    It's gonna be hot out there.
    The games should be streamed online?

    I do remember watching one of the games from the U17 championships online, think it was against the Swiss

    <EDIT>

    According to the tournament thread - http://foot.ie/threads/88939-U-17-Championships - it was actually the France game that was online
    anyone care to do a "where are they now" on the squad from the championships? AlaskaFox?
