Ambulance chasing and football and an ad in Four Four Two magazine....

Is the prevalance of ambulance chasing and the general compensation culture affecting football, particularly at Junior and other amateur level? I seem to recall reading somewhere about the soaring insurance premiums that the compo culture impose leading to the death of amateur sport... anyone on the ground have any insight into this?

This thought was provoked by an ad in the current Four Four Two mag, on page 166 there's a full page ad for this crowd

The ad in the mag features the headline "INJURED? OTHER PLAYER SENT OFF? You may be able to claim compensation.", above the usual no win no fee stuff and 4 "cases studies" i.e "Mr. R. - broken leg by a late challenge - other player sent off - recieved compensation of over £30,000"

Isn't this ambulance-chasing of the highest order? Should 442 - whose extensive ads for training gear and equipment presumably show that some proportion of their readership at least is involved with amateur football - be accepting this kind of ad?

The mag's email is 442@haynet.com, if anyone cares strongly enough ...

I think two legal principles apply.

The first was memorably summed up by Graham Roberts- "Football is a game of skill, but you get kicked". By agreeing to play you accept that injuries are possible.

The second is that the law ignores trivia- ie that the rules of the football authorities will generally apply in disputes, and anyone challenging this would need to demonstrate a crime/ negligence or whatever.

The adverts are certainly in poor taste.

Would like to see Local/National F.A.'s enforce payments of premiums into an insurance fund & also set up a fund,as they usually have plenty of money slopping about.....

I can't resist telling you about Dav's most recent run-in with the London football authorities. The big man (who only plays in exhibition friendlies nowadays) was dismissed from his technical area* after calling the nearest opposition defender a "fat bald cnut"

    * actually there isn't one, although the two ends at this stadium (Wormwood Scrubs, near QPR) are known as the 'railway' and 'prison'.

INTERESTING FACT: Recently a player who broke his ankle while playing on a pitch which had been subject to a pounding by horses, sued and won his case against the Dublin City Council, the club and the league. I think he received a 5 figure sum. The said player's father is a high ranking employee of the FAI.
