Surely you would agree that with a couple of more signings they will be (if they are not already) faveroutes to win the league and maybe even dare to win a couple of euro games . This would bring in some cash to refill coffers. AMBITION. ps - it shows the loyalty of their fans , other clubs might do well to follow suit.

Not saying they could have won, but a bit of ambition goes a long way.
A few years ago, the same Pats fans were telling us how they had no chance against Hertha Berlin, as Hertha were a "top" team. When the fixture came, Hertha had Andriy Voronin in their side, and were far from invincible. Soon, they were relegated from the Bundesliga. That's how good they were, or rather how good Pats thought they were.

We've come a long way as a country, in European club football in the past 10 years. Our clubs, Rovers included, have taken on a lot of so-called "better" sides and won. May not have broken the Group Stage ceiling yet, but it will come. A bit of ambition, and a refusal to throw in the towel before you start, gives you some chance of making a decent fist of a tie.

Something about this sounds vaguely familiar but I can't quite put my finger on it.

I think Shels, Cork , Bohs and Drogheda had the same sort of ideas.
I forget how that worked out. Pretty well i'm sure.

You realise fans don't actually play these games? Whether kdjac posts on the internet that the Ukrainians will batter Pats or not doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to the result.

They'd need to sign 4/5 players before I'd make them favourites

But surely there's never been a better time to overspend than now?

I think most clubs in Sligo's position (1 point clear at the top with 13 games to go and your main title rivals playing poorly) would take a small gamble to try and secure the title. We're not talking about the millions Shels and Bohs got themselves into debt with over a number of years, they're signing a couple of players for the last 4 months of the season. They may not be able to afford them but as long as they don't continue down the slippery slope of reckless spending into next season and address any losses they make this season I don't see much to criticise really.

okay, and should they not win the league, they are in debt. How can they get out of that debt ? I suppose the logical answer is to gamble on winning next years league by spending more money they dont have on players. That ought to do it

Sligo released their general manager earlier this season to spend his wages on players. Do you think this is a good step? They already have the second highest budget in the league.

That's why I said as long as they don't continue overspending next season and address any losses they make now, they will be ok. Plucking figures out of the air but say they end up losing 50k by the end of the season. Well that's 50k they will have to reduce next years budget by. If that's what they do then I don't see the problem.

No I don't agree it is a good step. I understand them doing it though with the position they find themselves in. They will have to make cuts next season to address any losses this season, if they do that they will be ok, if they don't they will be f**ked as we all know.

your right indeed and I am getting a bit ahead of myself in thinking that.
Next game is very important (they all are I know) and a must win.
The euro game is worth 90000 I beleive and that will cover the costs so a win would give them a chance to make some on next round.(no mad overspending yet).
Bound to pick up injuries and cards so need backup and really no one would feel that they should concede their title challange yet . two rounds gets them to group I think and these are like cup games so anything can happen. No one gave Drogs a chance against both Rovers but they were unlucky in both games to lose by all reports . Sligo Rovers will beat the Ukranians home and away.

You got to love all the digs here and negative views from other clubs supporters. The unity with Sligo Rovers supporters at the moment has never been seen in years. There is so much good will towards the club at the moment throughout the town and county in a recent fundraiser over €40000 was raised for the club. The cost of playing the uefa game in the Showgrounds along with a trip to the Ukraine would put any club in this league under pressure so supporters taken this proactive decision only reflects the goodwill for the club.

Not that much pressure if they are still able to sign big wage players

Supporters taking this action will ensure the club can still sign players without pushing the boundaries it's called been proactive
