I don't think the relegation system is taking anything away from the Premier this season though the number in relegation or play-off zone is down from 3 to 1. The current top 4, Pat's and Dundalk will be aiming for Europe or a cup anyways. Teams 6th, 7th and 8th should have a chance free of relegation worries to at least gain a solid footing in the Premier and look to build from there. When a relegation system comes in for the 12 team premier, I hope it's only the bottom club to go down with team second bottom in a relegation/promotion play-off.

It's been an exciting start to the season so far with only 6 points separating 1st and 7th. With only 10 clubs, it's not a bad thing that only the bottom 1 or 2 are facing a relegation worry. The top 7 or 8 clubs should be able to have a cushion from the relegation places. It gives some team a position to build and it's better that they are not looking over their shoulder. When the division becomes 12, I hopes it's only the bottom club going down with second bottom involved in a play-off.

    Galway Utd.

So Galway Utd could lose every game between now and the end of the season(a real possibility),finish rock bottom of the league way behind everyone else with lowest points total ever and yet still only need to win a one leg playoff game to stay up??Only in the LOI.

Eventhough the system is a shambles I reckon it's pretty unlikely that even in a one legged playoff Galway or Drogheda would catch any of the top four in the First Division.

And tbh even if they do, then the first division team won't deserve to go up.

Agreed. In fairness the play-off is a once of due to the Premier expansion. If the third place first division team has been unable to finish in the top 2 for automatic promotion and cannot beat the bottom club of the division above, they'll deserve to stay where they are.

This years system is as it is anyways. Going forward, should the bring back the relegation system of recent seasons or change it?

2 down, 2 up. Play offs are a nonsense.

I'd agree in a 16 team league. For 10 or 12 team league, 1.5 down, 1.5 up. The half being one of the so-called nonsense play-offs.

    A look across Europe:
    Denmark 2 (12)
    Scotland 1 (12)
    Swiss 1.5 (10)
    Austria 1 (10)
    Slovakia 1 (12)
    Finland 1 (12)
    Latvia 1 or 1.5 (9 or 10)
    Slovenia 1.5 (10)
    Iceland 2 (12)

Moldova 1 (14) They play 3 series of 13 games:
The pairings of the third round will then be set according to the standings after the first two rounds, giving every team a third game against each opponent for a total of 39 games per team. 1-7 have the extra home game.

A number of leagues with 16 tend to go 2 up and 2 down.

Disagree. The promotion/relegation play off is one of the few things the league got right.

A premier team against a first division team is a good thing, because it makes it more likely that the genuinely better team will be in the top division. Playoffs between teams in the same division are just gimmicky though. If a team's proved themselves better over 36 games, they shouldn't have to do it again in a one-off or two-legged affair.

It would be helpful if the FAI actually confirmed what the set up is going to be.

Come to think of it, perhaps a starting point is confirming if they will continue running the league at all or not.
