U12 A team got their League campaign off to a winning start when hitting Castlebar Town for 11 tonight in Celtic Park. Great display of passing football and they were missing one or two of their better players.
The clubs U-12A team started off their Mayo League campaign with a bang when hitting helpless Castlebar Town for 11 goals in Celtic Park on Friday evening. The young Hoops played some wonderful football throughout the 60 minutes and they were always looking to play the right ball. The Celtic defence of goalkeeper Daniel Plaster, Aaron McDonald, Alan Kelly, captain Brian Walsh and the outstanding Michael Fahy never allowed the Town’s strike force a sniff of goals and with this defensive dominance it allowed the superb midfield quartet of Ronan Dervan, Ruairi Nevin, Liam Whyte and Paddy Heneghan to attack at every opportunity. The clever front two of Dara Ludden and Conor Mongan were a handful all evening for the overworked Town defence The home side went in at half-time 7-0 up thanks to two goals from Ruairi Nevin, Dara Ludden and Liam Whyte and one from the impressive Ronan Dervan. The second half saw the introduction of James Robinson and this young player showed his potential with a wonderful display. Dara Ludden and Ruairi Nevin completed their hat-tricks and Ronan Dervan got his second and the excellent Paddy Heneghan got the goal his play deserved. Managers’ Gabriel Downes and Greg Whyte were delighted with the team’s performance especially the brand of football they produced against a gallant Castlebar Town side.
Fair point
Celtic C lost their first game of the season against the bigger and older Clew Bay. Clew Bay started brightly but found it very difficult to get past the solid Celtic back four of Emmet Murphy, Modestus, Conal Murray and the superb captain Paul Walsh. When they did Joe Tuohy was on hand to deny them. Clew Bay took the lead with a long range effort from their impressive midfielder. Celtic began to get a foothold in the game with the midfield of Darragh Curran, James Mc Dyer, James Robinson and the impressive Donnacha McHugh battling through out. The strike force of Alex Behan and Jamie McArdle caused trouble all game with their work rate and movement. Celtic emptied the bench in the second half and Karol Szopa, Daithe O'Dowd, Dylan McGarry, Dylan Tighe and Sé McDonald showed their potential with great displays and their side came painfully close to an equaliser on numerous occasions. As Celtic pushed on Clew Bay grabbed two late goals to put a gloss on the score that was harsh on the young Celts. The Celtic lads can be proud of their efforts in this tie and will know they will continue to improve. Celtic Squad: Joe Tuohy, Emmet Murphy, Conal Murray, Paul Walsh, Modestus, James Robinson, Darragh Curran, Donnacha McHugh, James McDyer, Alex Behan, Jamie McArdle, Karol Szopa, Daithe O'Dowd, Dylan McGarry, Dylan Tighe, Sé McDonald
The clubs U-12B team kicked their Mayo League campaign off with a defeat at the hands of a physically bigger S&F Utd side in Green Road last Friday evening. The Hoops who were missing a number of players were on the back foot for long periods in the first half but the home side were have great difficulty getting passed the excellent defence of goalkeeper Ultan Reilly who showed his potential with a string of fine saves and was well protected by his back four of Conor Baines, Eoghan McHale, Robert Stakelum and Jason High. The Celtic midfield of Finn Sammon, Kevin Moran, Conor Quinn and the impressive Eoin Barrett made the older and bigger counterparts battle for every ball. The hard working front two of Sean Kelly-Fair and Darragh Moran showed some lovely touches throughout the game and on another day might have got the goal their play deserved. It was the home side who went in at half-time deservedly 3-0 up following a commanding performance. The second half saw the introduction of Jason McDonagh and Ronan Kelly who gave their side fresh impetus and both played well. The Hoops did manage to pull a goal back through Kevin Moran but S&F added two more of their own to finish up 5-1 winners. There were many pluses to this young teams’ performance and they will improve as the season goes on.
B 1-1 (A O'Brien) with Ballyglass. Good result. Any reports
I can't see how you figure any of the above. What was lucky about the penalty? What was lucky about any of the goals? Gerry Hunts goal was a terrific strike, and Celtic should have had a definite penalty not 5 minutes before too. Celtic were well on top when they went 3-2 up.
Celtic were behind twice. Were pegged back with 10 to go after an unfortunate GK error. But still went on to win the game. How you can say they weren't up for it is totally unfair on the lads who broke their arses on the day.
"Throwing the ball out to defenders and messing around at the back only put pressure on the defence. We all love beautiful football but sometimes, especially in the Mayo League, you're better off putting in down the sides or into the corner. Not throwing a ball chest high to a full back, facing his own goal with 3 men closing him down. Its not La Liga, we are not Barcelona and its just dangerous against a team like Ballyheane that like to get in your face and close down the space. "No, Celtic are not Barcelona, but what is wrong with trying to play a style of football that kids enjoy, and do well? Do you reckon kicking the ball into the corners will work against Cherry Orchard and co in the FAI Cup? Usual short sightedness there where winning a Mayo title is more important than the bigger picture.
Go watch the Irish squads and development squads and see how they are taught. I can't believe team can get criticised for trying to pass the ball.
Taking nothing away from the strike, it was good. But, it took a nick on the way through and the keeper thought it was wide so he left it. The penalty was debatable. And I know Celtic should have had a definite penalty not 5 minutes before too, but Ballyheane should have had 2 aswell. I can say they didn't seem up for it because they didn't look up for it. The two strikers spent the last 20 minutes walking around until it was 3-3 and one of them realised he was actually in a game, decided to play and set up the winner. Theres nothing wrong with playing football kids like. Its another about doing it well. And no kicking it into the corners won't work against Cherry Orchard and co. Neither will dithering on the ball at the back and failing to clear your lines when it is the best option. The bigger picture is about educating those lads. So they know when under pressure not to take silly, unnecessary risks. Is winning the FAI the bigger picture to you? Because playing they way will only lead to that team being beaten, and well beaten by a fast, strong, offensive team. That team has fallen into a state of going through the motions. There is no consequence as far as they're concerned. I'm sure you'll argue this point too but if a player on that team plays a square ball across the box and the opposition striker steps in and scores there is nothing said. You think that happens in Irish squads and development squads? You think players are allowed carry on making mistake after mistake and not even be told what they're doing wrong? This is Castlebar Celtic. You talk about development squads well we want to be at that level. It may sound big headed but we should not tolerate basic errors from lads that age if we want them to be the best they can be. And for the record I didn't criticise passing the ball, I critisised throwing a ball chest high to a full back, facing his own goal with 3 men closing him down. You would not see that at any level of football and expect everybody to say jesus fair play thats a great pass, great football as the other team nicks it and almost scores.
Mistakes will be made, that is the nature of football. Is it not better to make mistakes now and learn from them as the season goes on? You say they don't do it well, yet I'm not so sure how many times you've seen this team play together this year.Originally Posted by

"There is no consequence as far as they're concerned. I'm sure you'll argue this point too but if a player on that team plays a square ball across the box and the opposition striker steps in and scores there is nothing said." - Let me ask you, how do you know this?
"You think that happens in Irish squads and development squads? You think players are allowed carry on making mistake after mistake and not even be told what they're doing wrong?" - Again, how do you know they aren't being told? You're doing a hell of a lot of assuming here, which is unfair.
"This is Castlebar Celtic. You talk about development squads well we want to be at that level. It may sound big headed but we should not tolerate basic errors from lads that age if we want them to be the best they can be." - Agree fully with all of this. But how do we get to that level? Kicking it into the corners? I don't think so.
"And for the record I didn't criticise passing the ball, I critisised throwing a ball chest high to a full back, facing his own goal with 3 men closing him down." - That's fair, and again I agree with you here. But lets give Ballyheane some credit in this sense. They closed like madmen the last night and tested Celtic at every opportunity. But for me, I thought the Celtic lads did well in the sense that they stuck to their game plan, and it ultimately paid off.
"You would not see that at any level of football and expect everybody to say jesus fair play thats a great pass, great football as the other team nicks it and almost scores." - Playing football like that for the first time will ultimately lead to the odd mistake. So what? This is how players will learn.
Good result for the SL team today. Good to maintain our place at the top with 5 games to play. Few big ones coming up
Huge amount of games this week. Good win for the 16s with baba showing his class. Well done lads, 2-1 v Manulla.
Under 17 girls lost 3-2 to Cbar Town tonight, but played very well. Under 16 girls and Under 12 girls starts tomorrow, while the 14s girls starts Thurs.
18s kick off at home to Westport B while the B team travel to face Westport A on Thurs. Loads more games on top of this!
Great and deserved win for the U16 last night. Good performance by a young U-17 Girls side. Big day for a lot of Celtic girls who will play for the club for the first time at U-12 away to Ballinrobe. Good luck to the U-16 girls tonight who are at home to Kilmurray
Great win by U-12 girls and U16 unlucky against a good Kilmurray side
Good start from the girls in Ballinrobe! Hopefully they can kick on now. Couple of really good prospects both there and in the u16 team. They were unlucky against a strong Kilmurry side.
Hope the pitch holds up tonight after the weather. The Under14 girls kick off their season and so do the Under18 boys. The pitch is under a lot of pressure these days!
Under 14 boys lost 3-2 to Ballina at Celtic last night. Not the start they wanted but hope they can shake off the cobwebs next week and get back on track!
Some very poor decisions went against them (two goals handed to Town by ref) and when 2-2 a lot of subs introducded. At least all got a game. Town a good outfit. Need to be at their best next week as they play a very good Westport side who are my pick to win the title.
How did the under 18 teams get on last night?
U-18 'A' had a lucky win against Westport 'B' 2-1. The 'B' team I can only hope had a better game against Westport 'A', but I havn't recieved a report or result yet
I was at the U-18 game and the win was not lucky. Yes it is not the greatest U-18 side ever to play for Celtic with the majority of players are from the U-17 side. Utd got an early goal and worked their socks off but it was Celtic who had the ball for the majority of time. I cannot see them beating Utd 'A' but if they can get all their players back they should be stronger.
