Good weeken for Celtic. 17s into the cup final. Juniors maintained their lead at the top of the superleague and our women are through to the next round of the FAI Intermediate cup. Sadly, Mervue pulled out so it was a bye.

Great win by the U-17 last night against a very hard working Ballyheane side. O'Connor lad in the middle for Heane was outstanding as were Baba & Nevin for the Hoops. Pity he will be playing for Mayo Senior team in two/three years time. Celtic played a lot of good football and the winning goal was a great move and coolly finished by Gary Walsh. All other goals were scrappy. Heane were more direct while Celtic built up from the back. Two different styles. Both teams missing players. Pity Ballyheane did not turn up for Cup semi-final against Erris last Saturday as it would be some cup final. Heard they were missing O'Connor (Mayo minor) and two of the team were in the Senior B team for their cup final. Even without O'Connor they should have been good enough to beat Iorras but we will never known. Well done to Mark & Michael who have done a great job with this group of players, lets hope for a league & cup double.
Given in what I saw of it a draw would have been a fair result. I think saying there was a contrast in styles is a little over the top. Both teams contributed to one of the most enjoyable underage games I have seen for a long time.
I felt it was a poor performance from Celtic from front to back. Never seemed up for it which, in a local derby with a trophy at stake at home, is criminal. Ballyheane imposed themselves on the game more in the 1st half and got their rewards by being 2-1 up at the break. Celtic, in fairness, lifted the tempo in the second half but still struggled to string much together. Got a lucky goal, and then a lucky penalty. The winner, in the 88th minute, was a well worked goal and well finished. Ballyheane were unlucky to lose out on the day, but in the end the better team won. A bit more fight and drive and an injection of passion is badly needed in that team. The ref was abysmal, dishing out yellow cards for pretty much nothing and getting decisions wrong. But thats life. Another thing which caught my eye, and many in the grounds, was at the end after all was said and done, the 'Heane players were marched into the dressing rooms and didn't watch the presentation. It may be a minor thing, but sportsmanship and graciousness in defeat should be instilled in players at that age. Well done to Celtic, sign of a good team playing poorly and winning. Now go, enjoy your day out in Milebush and secure the double.

How many times did the Heane keeper throw the ball to his defenders, not once. The Celtic keeper only kicked the ball long on a handful of occasions. I didnt say one style was better than the other, but it seemed to me that one team tried to build from the back and one was more direct. I wished Celtic would mix it up more and go long but thats not what the manager wants and the players seem to like to play this way.
Throwing the ball out to defenders and messing around at the back only put pressure on the defence. We all love beautiful football but sometimes, especially in the Mayo League, you're better off putting in down the sides or into the corner. Not throwing a ball chest high to a full back, facing his own goal with 3 men closing him down. Its not La Liga, we are not Barcelona and its just dangerous against a team like Ballyheane that like to get in your face and close down the space.
Take your point, a bit of both would be more effective and less dangerous. IMO Heane did deserve a draw. Celtic Peno was the correct decision. If that tackle was in the middle of the pitch it would be free kick. You cannot run into the back of a player and not give away a free kick, Celtic player new what he was doing. Heane should have had one in the first half and Colm Nevin was also taken down in the second. Ref poor for both teams but like all derbys' hard to control.
Big game for the super league side at the weekend. Two of the three form teams meeting. Town seem to on a roll following early season blip. Would be happy with any result.

Great win for the B team tonight, 4-1 victory over Moyvilla. Any report on the game? The U-13 side advanced to the Mayo Cup semi-final following a 7-0 victory over Castlebar Town. Well done to all involved.

The Mayo U-13 Premier League Champions have cruised into the Mayo Cup semi-final following a comprehensive victory over Castlebar Town on Thursday evening. The Tom Kelly, Peter Jennings and Colm Murphy managed side started the brightest in this local derby and they had the Town defence on the back foot from the kick-off. The Celtic midfield of Ben Murphy, Steve Martin, Paul McDermott and Gavin Durkan were in dominating form throughout the game and the excellent striking partnership of Thieere Baba and Aaron Naughton whose clever runs and interplay had the home rearguard on full alert. It took the Hoops a while to get the measure of the well marshalled home defence but once Thieere Baba ran onto a Ben Murphy through ball and coolly took the first opening of the game there was only going to be one winner of this cup tie. The Celtic defence had to be reshuffled due to the absence of Jack Rowland and Brian Walsh and the excellent Adam Ruane came in at right back and Liam Whyte was given an uncustomary role at left back where he was a revelation as was Mark Kelly at center half as he had to be at his best to nullify the dangerous Town strike force and he was ably assisted by the cool Ruairi Nevin and they limited the home team to a few half chances which were expertly dealt with by goalkeeper and team captain James Foy. The hard working Steve Martin added the second with ten minutes remaining in the first half and this was soon followed up by an Aaron Naughton strike. The introduction of Dara Ludden, Josh O’Connell, Robbie Carson, Rory Gaffney, Ethan Barrett and Tiernan O’Leary showed the strength in depth available in this talented squad and they all played their part in this impressive victory. The second half was only five minutes old when Aaron Naughton grabbed his second and his sides' fourth. Ruairi Nevin made it five with a tremendous free kick and this was followed by two well taken goals from Josh O’Connell and Tiernan O’Leary his first for the club. The management team were happy with the overall squad’s performance against a spirited Town side. At the end of the game the Mayo Youths Secretary Mr. David Breen presented the Mayo U-13 Premier League shield to the Celtic captain James Foy.

B Team had a hard fought win over Moan Villa. Sorry, Moyne Villa. Celtic went one up after Terrence Maughan scored from close range after Stephen 'Juice/Jinx' Jennings' brilliant corner. Moyne Villa equalized with virtually the last kick of a ball in the first half. It was a well worked goal finished by some dude who apparently is unreal. The same dude went on to mock the Celtic bench in celebration, but was given a taste of his own medicine when he sent a penalty literally about 15 feet over the crossbar. Celtic then scored via Mark Rowland after Eamonn Creans flick on from Adrien O' Briens throw in. Moyne Villa protested furiously that Ritzer had handled the ball over the line, a knowing grin seem to indicate so. Nonetheless, the goal stood and Celtic were in control. Celtic bagged 2 more goals as Moyne Villa pushed forward. Eamonn Crean got the goal his efforts deserved and another individual grabbed a 4th although the nature and beneficiary of the goal escape me. All in all a good day at the office
Big game now against Ballyglass this Saturday, promotion rather than a relegation match, as the start of the season suggested. Great turn around by all involved. By all accounts Ballyglass gave use a bit if a trimming the last time they played.
I tought that was Mayo league game not a Connaught cup game, Moyne Villa plays in the Galway district league it is Moy Villa that plays in the Mayo league.
