    Fanzines

    Hi Folks;

Just wanted to include a section on fanzines in the new LOI book , which does look like it will be called "Just Follow The Floodlights" , so cheers for that.
Its important they get a mention as although clubs are weary of them, it puts across what supporters feel (good and bad), and has to have a mention in a book like this.
If your club has produced one at some point, have you a little info on them or maybe a contact or two? I know a lot of them have gone on to become websites or on Facebook , its now a case of trying to catalogue and find a few of them.

Myself and the other UCD lads on here ran STIG for ten years. There's sample stuff here, including two full issues. Favourite non-article moments for me were Ollie Byrne ringing the club to have the full page ad in the programme removed after he featured on the front page, and being credited by none other than Tony McDonnell with starting the big Paul Doolin/Pete Mahon newspaper row when we played Drogheda in the 2005 League Cup. I'm obviously biased, but there's a rake of articles that I still enjoy reading over.

Edit - don't know how I missed that post above! Did you take some of the back issues when you were at the UCD shop that time?

Stig is inactive, actually. It published something like 80 issues during something like 2001-2009. It was composed of an odd mix of serious and satirical comment on the league and the FAI (and the college's rebranding and Americanisation under Hugh Brady), together with random filler. Occasionally a little over the top in its criticisms, it took the 'if our article composed entirely of Simpsons quotes, it can't be libel' approach to avoiding lawsuits.

For a few examples, I'll start with two of their cartoons, one sending up Damien Richardson's habit of talking crap, the other a transparent retelling of Ireland's narrow win over San Marino under Steve Staunton and the efforts John Delaney went to to deflect criticism. Two of their serious articles now, one on Department of Sport priorities, the other on the financial state of the league. Here's a satirical piece on the process by which Galway were promoted when the FAI took over the league, and here's another on UCD's controversial rebranding, which also takes a swipe at licensing over an incident where one club's application was returned for being in the wrong colour ink.

Fanzines died out when the internet became popular around the millennium. Pity as there was a good few decent ones in the 90s

There was a joint Monaghan United/ Dundalk FC fanzine in 1994 entitled Flagtime Cowboys. Think there were 2 or 3 editions in total around the time of DFC's pre-season friendlies with Manchester United that year.

The two editors went on to set up the UEFA website about 4 years later.

And here, once again, is another reason why I frickin' love this league!

i've written for No More Plastic Pitches, FourFiveOne and IWOTO over the years.
NMPP was a fantastic fanzine, one of the best i've ever seen.
Other Cork City fanzines are/were Going Commando and Hoof.

    No doubt i've forgotten some.

We had an amazing 4 editions of "Two Balls No Cup" 2009/10, but there hasn't been one for a year. We also had "Blues Til I Die" years ago.

Think Bohs had Dalymount Roar and Only Fools And Horses in the 80's and 90's. Cant remember how long either ran for. Probably not very long. Only Fools and Horses was a good read if I remember correctly.

They had Nineteen Eighty Four around 2001/02 as well. I have issue 3 at home, I think. Also have some copies of Red Inc (Shels), Blue Til I Die (Waterford), One F In Longford (Longford), Down to the River (Harps), ForzaDrogs (Drogheda), Out on a Lim (Limerick), Osam is Doubtful (Pat's) and FourFiveOne (Cork).

Great to Galway United fanzine is out again. Last issue was in 1994, Issue 9 came out last week. There's nothing on line but it is on Twitter at @GalwayUnited

I don't know which pleases me more... the fact that there's another LoI fanzine out there or the fact that they continued the numbering after a 20 year hiatus
