I've watched Casey a few times in friendlies over here. A bit like Tony Cascarino in the way he plays. Big lad, holds the ball up well, not much else. Speaking of Americans of Irish descent, there was a rumer a while back that Kerr was looking at Pat Noonan of the Revs up in Boston. He has made a habit of scoring a bucketfull of goals whenever they play the Metrostars. I think his parents are from Ireland.
It's kinda funny though that the scorers for the US against Portugal in the last WC were O'Brien, Donovan and McBride.

I lived over there for a while and it's a pretty decent standard. It's easy to knock it from here because we have no exposure to it, but the majority of their (top ten ranked in the world btw) national team are based at home and players like Tim Howard and Brian McBride made the transfer to the premiership with great ease.
If it does have a drawback it's the absence of divisions 2-4, the semi-pro leagues are poor and the collegiate system is responsible for the majority of players coming through, it can make them over reliant on substandard (usually former greats now past it) foreigners to fill out the ranks, although thats an accusation that can be levelled at most american team sports.

Let's face it someone with a name like Conor Casey has to be more than a little bit irish. At least 1st generation. I'd heard Kerr scouted a lot of dudes in the US. Noonan is pretty good but he's not turning it on thi year and has been capped surely by the USA anyway by now

as a resident of canada and a frequent viewer of MLS I can tell ye it's not that bad - the general consensus is that the good teams are like coventry or other mid-div 1 england sides while therer are one or two appaling teams also

Its just that in the article it says he is a US international so I'm assuming that means he is American and cannot play for us. I would be very surprised if any American "Irishman" would declare for ROI if he felt he had a chance of representing the US. The level of patriotism over here would embarrass any European, not to mention the national superiority complex.

Obviously the idea would be scrapped if the USA didn't win!
tricky_colour, you are correct in some of your observations. However, the US has made great strides since 1990. In the 80's for a long time they didnt even have a team. Now they are probably the best team in the region. (They have consistantly beaten Mexico since 2000 except 1 in the Azteca).
MLS with all its warts and flaws but it turning around into a normal sort of league. Gone are the shoot-out wins and extra-time if tied after 90 for regular season games. But it has proved to be a great springboard that helps the national team and players who end up moving to Europe. They have a number of underage players who could make an impact by the 2006 or more likely the 2010 World Cup. Not saying they will win it or anything but probably good enough to get out of the group stages with a bit of luck.
As for the popularity, yes it does lag behind Pointyball, Baseball, Basketball and Ice-Hockey though I think it will overtake Ice-Hockey in a few years. The 3 major sport dominate the sports stage on TV and I really don't think that stranglehold will be broken for a long time. Commercial-wise, these sports are more "TV-friendly" over here, allowing the TV network to cut to ads every few minutes, unlike soccer. (a 60 minute pointyball game takes 3-4 hours to play, a 48 minute basketball game takes 2.5 hours to play)Therefore, TV networks make less money off soccer. Soccer therefore is relegated to niche pay channels like Fox Sports World, GOL TV and to a lesser extent ESPN2. It's sad but true, but ESPN who own the rights for Champions League sometimes puts on Fly Fishing or Worlds Strongest Man Competition reruns instead of showing live CL. Why? Because they make more money that way. In 2002, some local markets did not show ABC's live coverage of the World Cup final, showing infomercials instead.
So in a way, it is an uphill battle but slowly it is getting there.
