    Republic of Ireland V Uruguay - Tuesday, 29th March 2011 - Friendly

What will the attendance be? Anyone going to the game?
Trap was vigorous for his age following the win on Saturday Night, seemingly miffed that the press does not support him more.
What is the aim of the Uruguay game? Will the bashers of Darren O'Dea want Ciaran Clark(e) to show "His Stuff?"
Stutts, POSH, Gastric, and Geysir have some blogs to write.
    Right here.
Enjoy some Van Halen in the meantime:

Given the injuries we have, and what we know about how Trap won't make mass changes or change his system, I'd like to see something like

    ------------Forde----------
    Foley Clark Dunne Kilbane
    Lawrence Wilson Gibson Duff
    --------Keane Long--------

It would be nice to see one of the other goalkeepers, and how Wilson slots into our midfield. Maybe put McCarthy on for Gibson at half time and get a look at him in the more advanced midfield role.

I expect it to be something like:

    - - - - - - - - Westwood - - - - - - - -
    Foley - - - O'Dea - - - Dunne - - - Clark
    Lawrence - McCarthy - Whelan - McGeady
    - - - - - - - Keane - Long - - - - - - - -

Would like to see Fahey in there but somehow I doubt it.

I like the idea of only playing one up front like AlaskaFox says.

No point in playing Duff. He should be cryogenically stored until June.

I think Walters should be called over. The sprog is out and his missus' mother will be far more welcome around the house than he would. Trust me on this one.

I would start Dunne again, just to give O'Dea or Clark someone who'll mentor by example. I'd probably go with:

    ------Westwood------
    Foley-Dunne-O'Dea-Clark
    --Gibson-----Fahey--
    Lawrence---McCarthy---McGeady
    -------Long------

    Walters & Wilson to feature.

He says himself as a defensive midfielder.

    Then let's play Wilson there.
Your CM of Fahey and Gibson just doesn't cut the mustard defensively.

Possibly. Maybe Fahey & Gibson are competing for the one place.

If we dabble in one up front, then Walters may be the type of player best suited, ahead of Long.
But I have only seen Walters in that Wales game.

Kilbane is flying back top England to play for Huddersfield today against Notts County - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...-24-hours.html - so presumably he won't play against Uruguay on tuesday, leaving Clark and O' Dea as the only recognized left sided defenders in the squad.
I'd start Clark, and give O' Dea another run in central defense. He'll need the experience if theres another injury crisis in June

Keane, Kilbane, Dunne, Duff and Doyle sent home.

EDIT: Stokes and Sheridan on stand-by, as the article says.

So that means a back four of Foley, Kelly, O'Dea and Clark. Long is the only recognised striker left in the squad?

No problems with that whatsoever. People complain that Trapattoni doesn't experiment in friendlies, bit sending five of his regular starters back to their clubs shows he is willing to do just that against Uruguay.
I'd like to see one of the other keepers in the squad given a run too.

Walters could easily fly over this evening. The kid has been born. It's not even his first!

I'm sure his missus has a mother. A pro footballer can afford a nanny or a doula. We really need Walters to make this trip. Although he has been excused, he should offer to come.

During the Ashes Bob Willis was scathing of Jimmy Anderson flying home - with plenty of time in between tests - for the birth of a kid. It was quite funny in a neanderthal anti new man kind of way.

We need to put these friendies to productive use.
