Not sure where his father's from. Probably from around Limavady or Eglinton. His mother's from Scotland, I believe. So, Scotland maybe?

What a divine piece of commentary from Mícheal. How lucky are we.

it's a bit of a running joke with me and my mates, whenever anyone mentions two places together, as in "it's either placeA, or placeB", automatically someone says "neither a hurling stronghold"

I always wonder how I acquired my mates, no way they would get that and I'd get glazed looks of "what's a hurling?"

"Shane Ferguson's dressing room promotion": http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newca...2703-29058886/

SHANE FERGUSON has been promoted to Newcastle United’s first-team dressing room and told to make a name for himself by Alan Pardew.

United have missed out on the signing of full-back Neil Taylor after the Welsh international’s move to Tyneside fell through and he signed a four-year deal with the Swans.

However, the emphasis now turns to the promising Ferguson for United fans.

The Irish left-back – who will start against Darlington tonight with Jose Enrique not set to figure – has cut a toned and stockier figure on his return to training since the Magpies’ summer break, and admits he is raring to go.

It would be quite amusing if he ended up playing for them....
Wonder how it'll turn out for him at Newcastle this season;a make-or-break year?

No word, although he was subbed in Newcastle's pre-season friendly against Darlington due to picking up what Pardew described as a "serious" injury. Think he pulled a muscle of some sort, but he's been forced to pull out of the club's trip to the US as a result. If he's going to be out for a while, I suppose the so-called "international tug-of-war" may rage on another while yet...

What if they say Kilkenney and Tipperary?

Anyways, seems like a nice prospect.

Ha, I'd read that Pardew described it as "serious" in an article but the bit about pulling a muscle came from another forum, so possibly not all that reliable.

It's feared Ferguson will miss the start of the new season due to the injury he picked up the other day: http://www.sportinglife.com/football...e.html&BID=312

The 20-year-old damaged an ankle in a collision with keeper Fraser Forster during Friday night's friendly victory at Darlington and as a result did not travel with the rest of the first-team squad when they flew out to the United States on Sunday.

Ferguson was due to have a second scan on the injury today, but - like midfielder Danny Guthrie, who is also undergoing treatment on Tyneside after picking up an ankle knock in the same game - could miss the start of the new season.

The full-back told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "It all happened so quickly.

"I tried to get out of Fraser's way and didn't manage it quick enough. My leg got caught underneath him and it's unfortunate really - just bad timing.

"I knew straight away that something wasn't right. They had a look at me and they think it is the ligaments in my ankle.

"I'm going for another scan on Tuesday and I will just see how it is then and how long I will be out for.

"I'm absolutely gutted [at not going to America]. It's the worst timing ever.
Not sure what the results of the scan showed. They don't appear to have been released yet.

In related news, apparently Liverpool are stepping up efforts to sign José Enrique: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/spo...e_for_Enrique/

Whether that could see Ferguson taking over the starting spot at left back remains to be seen, although it appears unlikely considering the injury and talk of Newcastle signing a replacement for José Enrique.

Liverpool are aware that Arsenal are in the hunt to bring in a replacement for Clichy and Enrique is also under consideration at the Emirates.

Dalglish, whose first team squad returns to training on Merseyside today after returning from a tour of Malaysia, is keen to make quick progress in his search to find the left-back that will bring an end to his summer spending.

Pardew has also begun to seriously think about a replacement, particularly after he conceded defeat in his pursuit of Neil Taylor.

Taylor’s decision to sign a four-year deal at Swansea means Newcastle are no nearer to bringing in a left-back, although they have been linked with a move for Wayne Bridge.

The need for a new full-back has been further heightened by news that Shane Ferguson could miss the start of the season with an ankle problem.

Ferguson had a further scan yesterday on the problem sustained in Friday’s friendly with Darlington.

Apparently, the SFA have been in touch with Ferguson as he's eligible for them through his Scottish mother. Nevertheless, he still appears to be deciding on his future international career.
