28 and suddenly decides he'd like to play for Ireland. Thanks but no thanks.
from rte.ie
"The 28-year-old Stoke winger, who has represented England at Under-21 level, has admitted he has given up hope of winning senior caps for the country of his birth and indicated he wants to turn instead to Ireland, for whom he believes he qualifies through his grandfather."
ya mean he's not even sure???![]()
Folding my way into the big money!!!
28 and suddenly decides he'd like to play for Ireland. Thanks but no thanks.
I wonder who strayed
I'm a bloke,I'm an ocker
And I really love your knockers,I'm a labourer by day,
I **** up all me pay,Watching footy on TV,
Just feed me more VB,Just pour my beer,And get my smokes, And go away
Those caps were a long time ago. He has largely blown a promising career and now is being very disrespectful in how he has chosen to approach this. We should not be a back up late career plan for bums like this. Our national side should hold itself in better regard, and if the maganement wont do that maybe its time for the supporters to join together somehow and make that clear, managers and players come and go but it is our national side, that remains. IMO.
For me, the only question is whether he brings anything to the team/squad we don't have already have. I don't really think so.
Aldridge is not a like for like comparison here as has been pionted out elsewhere I believe. This guy fancies a world cup on his CV and is looking to use us to get it because he blew his real career, he isnt even sure if he qualifies, how Irish is that? Come on now, would you really be comfortable with this guy in a squad going to a finals ahead of a player who actually got us to those finals? And had given loyal service over several campaigns? It would be a bleak day.
That said, I dont think he would make our squad anyway.
Am I the only one who thinks he is absolute crap?
He has a lot of natural ability and I think he does offer something Stoke something they lack when he plays (particularly as an impact player) but he really doesn't do it often enough and he has little interest in defensive work. He's basically an inferior version of McGeady.
Nah , i cant imagine your on your own with that opinion BennoCelt
I think he is atrocious and along with the fact that he has the attitude of kevin Nolan with regards to playing for us, I dont want him anywhere near the Ireland squad
Mad to think that he was once the most expensive trainee when Arsenal signed all those years ago...I cant see any of the potential they saw in him , although he has had a troubled career so ill give them the benefit of the doubt on that
Two words spring to mind on the thinking of players like Pennant : "Sloppy Seconds"
Surely we value ourselves and our football team more than entertaining this kind of mercenary?
Personallty I'm totally underwhelmed by this. However interesting thread from our perspective.
Lots of indignation that he should select us as second choice etc - usually swiftly followed by the fact that he would not add anything anyway!
I wonder could we afford to be so self righteous if he was a great striker or even a semi-competent centre midfielder!
I think the far softer reaction to O'Hara on here answers that. Not a lot between these two in terms of how they view playing for us. I dont want either.Paddy Garcia;1462204I wonder could we afford to be so self righteous if he was a great striker or even a semi-competent centre midfielder!
This article would suggest a telephone call is all that is necessary! I would have thought the likes of O'Hara and Stearman would be more of a priority as we are pretty strong as wingers go.

I agree with a previous post, and say cap him and have him as an option (you'd never know when or if you might need him due to injuries, suspensions etc, he's a better option than some of the trype that GT currenly picks.
The way some of you are speaking, you'd swear we were blessed with talent..............lets not forget this guy has Premier League & Champions League experience (not like the average Championship players that are currently in the squads) and has played for Arsenal, Liverpool, R.Zaragoza, Stoke, Leeds, Birmingham & Portsmouth, so all the scouts/management teams from each of these clubs must have seen something in him to sign him.
He's a decent crosser of a ball and I'm sure Kevin Doyle would relish him in the team instead of the "head down and inconsistant McGeady".
And please dont give me that crap about his English roots, since when did that matter????

and, a few minutes later, http://twitter.com/#!/DMeyler/status/45258138525511680Jermaine Pennant wants to play Ireland eh???!!!
One of the greatest achievements as a kid who plays football is playing for you country at any level, this shouldn't be taken for granted!
He made a similar comment a while back that I for one interpreted as a dig at a certain Mr. Ireland.
I like this Meyler lad.
I dont think its so much 'English roots' , its more that he actually is English, in an indisputable undeniable born and bred kind of way, Abbeyvale.
The 'roots' are Irish here and even then, tenuous at best, just enough to scrape eligibility, and of no consequence to this guy until just now, when he sees a chance to exploit them.
Or did you miss that?
And it does matter, its our country and it matters who is representing us by playing for that country. Thats where it matters, or at least should do.
