Movie experts......name this

I saw this film years ago on RTE, late 80's \ early 90's. I remember it was quite good at the time, and I want to try and get it on DVD if I can. Have no idea what it's called though. It was a very distinctive film about a battle \ war in the desert.

• The film is based in a desert
• It has Arab clothed men fighting against an army and army tanks
• Bunkers dug in the sand are a big feature in the film
• There is also a hanging \ hangings in the film
• A lot of killing and bloodshed

Only title I can come across that it could be is "Lion of the desert" (1980), but I don't think this is it. Any of ye know this film? If not, is there a film\movie query facility on the net that I could use?

was it black and white or colour, do you remember any of the actors or a piece of dialogue?
